    Manfrotto 501PLONG reviews

501PLONG Quick Release Video Camera Plate is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the Job I shoot ENG and tripod all of the time, so quick release is important to me. Upgrading the camera plate allows for better balancing of all of my gear; the short plate was sometimes just a little bit too small to allow for this. I run a Sony PMW-EX3, but I've switched out with other units, too, small to mid-range. No problems at all. Measurements on the side are a nice feature when switching setups and getting back to a certain configuration, though I run the plate through the camera head enough that I expect them to rub off. I bit pricey for a piece of metal, but it is snug in my 503HDV camera head, and it does the trick.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not So Long I bought this plate thinking that it would be longer than the standard one that I use with my Manfrotto 516 head... it is exactly the same length! And then I realized that this plate doesn't fit the 516 head at all. So Manfrotto must have shrunk the standard plate size with the new hd series of tripod heads came out. Too bad. Although the holding pin to fit to the underside of some camcorders with only one thread mount and a smooth hole is a nice idea, it still allows for a fair amount of play when the camera is tightened to the plate, which renders it much less useful.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Insanely priced but works perfectly I'm still confused by the differences (if any) between this plate and the 504PLong plate. They are both horribly overpriced but when you need the extra sliding capability (like I did), then this is the ideal piece to buy. I would have given it more stars but the price, in my opinion, is just too high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS AS PLANNED I shoot video using the Canon 5d mostly with long lenses mounted on a Manfrotto 305 head. The long plate (mounted on the lens shoe) allows me to balance the camera and lens combinations thus reducing the amount of creep to zero after locking down. Also, I can keep the short plate mounted on the camera body, which means that I can switch to short, wide-angle lenses quickly. Perfect set up for a nature photog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Weight Distribution If you can get over the fact it's obviously ridiculously overpriced, its great. Works perfect for my Steadicam Kit. Really helps with a front-heavy Lenses, and the markings on the side make it a good reference for quickly re-balancing, and finding the camera units centre of gravity. One great thing about it is the fact the locator/alignment pin, can be moved on the plate, when on most manfrotto quick release plates, the gold pin can't be moved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for bigger cameras! I use this plate for my C100 and C100 mkII, as it fits perfectly with my collection of Manfrotto heads/tripods and two sliders. It's perfect for bigger cameras and heavier lenses. It offers more stability when placing the camera on a table or the floor, and just gives you a feeling of security. I say it's worth the price tag. Manfrotto simply makes great products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solution for balancing different camera setups I use the Manfrotto 577 quick release system but the standard plate that comes with it wasn't giving me enough front-back adjustment to balance my camera on the tripod. This gives me some extra adjustment room and makes it easier to adjust for different camera setups. As others have said it does seem expensive though for what you are getting.
