Will this fit the AI-S 400mm 2.8?
Unfortunately no, this Nikon Front Lens Cover for 200mm, 300mm, 200-400mm Lenses does not fit the Nikon AI-S 400mm f/2.8 lens. This cover has a maximum front diameter of 145mm that it could fit around, and that Nikon AI-S 400mm f/2.8 lens is 160mm at the front end and maybe even larger at the end of the bayonet for its lens hood.

Will this fit the HK-38 lens hood for the AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens? If not, what will replace the original cover?
No, the Nikon Front Lens Cover for 200mm, 300mm, 200-400mm Lenses (MFR #4735) is not the correct cover for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens (MFR #2217). The cover for this is not currently available separately.

Has anyone tried this with the HK-22 lens hood, used on the older non-VR 300mm f2.8? Mine looks to be about 135mm diameter.
It should definitely work, your hood and the 200-400mm hood are the same diameter.

We are not sure of which of the many version of Nikkor 200mm f/2 lenses you have. Therefore, please measure the front of the lens. If it is less than 145mm, you are good to go.

HiYes, it fits over the lens hood on my lens snugly, so I assume that it will over the HK30, which looks to be the same spec as the hood on my old lens.RegardsCarl
