Can this be pushed up against a wall - nearly flat?
Yes, but will not give a end-user the proper support needed to hold top heavy items.
Always suggest spreading the footprint on stands for maximum support.

Does the bottom spigot detach from the pole as shown in the picture? Mine appears stuck.
Yes, the spigot can be removed and attached to the threaded hole in the leg. Try a bit of force with pliers and cloth wrapped around the spigot.

question
Anyone using this with the Westcott Eyelighter?
No I haven't I would think it would be to low and legs don't spread far enough to have good balance.

question
If you had two of these units and needed it to be taller than 3' could you take the extension from the 2nd unit and combine with the first to get it up to 6 feet?
No.

question
Can somebody tell me if this stand would hold an Alien Bee strobe or it's designed to be used with speed lights? If it does, does it feel secure, can I trust it? Thanks.
I have used it with a Dracast LED500 without any problem but if you need something really solid go for other option

question
What is the diameter of the pole? I'm trying to find a stand to attach a tablet mount. The mount I'm looking at has an adjustable mic stand clamp (up to 1.2 /3.1 cm) that can be mounted on a vertical pole or horizontal boom. I want to leave the option for adding a light panel to the top, which is why I'm looking at a heavier duty stand.
the diameter is 0.79578 (I measured the circumference which is 2.5 and did the calculation for d.) I would not consider this stand heavy duty, however. The 3 legs fold out like a fan and are not very sturdy, especially if something were weighted to one side.
