Pelican 1660 Overview

The Pelican 1660 Protector Case keeps sensitive gear protected when you're on the move. Virtually unbreakable, it is resistant to water, dust, chemicals, and corrosion. Heavy so wasn't the cheapest thing trying to get through the airport but its sturdy built and everything inside was a lot safer in there than out here.

Built like a tank but weighs as much.

Absolutely love the build quality of the Pelican 1660! It's as solid as they come. The difficulty for me is that I travel with gear so this case presents a problem in it's size and weight. At over 40 pounds, it didn't take much to reach the overweight charge from the airline, in fact, I left the case 20-25% underpacked to stay below the 75lbs mark. The massive case size forced me into a full sized SUV rental which was five times more expensive than most other cars. It's difficult to picture the 1660's physical size from the on-line images. It's a massive case that is probably best suited for local use.

How would this case fare up against one of the Think Tank Airport 3.0 model roller backpacks? The Pelican is 55lbs and the Think Tank is 12lbs. I have see a lot of people with one or the other and didn't ask when I had the chance. I do have a 35 y/o Halliburton Large case but it needs foam and isn't large enough.

I would suggest a better comparison would be between the Think Tank Photo Airport TakeOff V2.0 Rolling Camera Bag (Black) B&H # THATV2RBP and the Pelican 1510TP Carry-On Case with TrekPak Divider System (Black) B&H # PE1510TPBK. They both carry about the same amount of gear, are about the same size and both meet airline carry-on regulation being less the linear 45 limit. The Pelican is cheaper, more utilitarian looking, heavier, and hard while the Think Tank is more expensive, more attractive looking, lighter and softer. However, the Pelican can be thrown into a lake or be driven over by a car. The choice is yours.

Whether with the foam or the padded dividers - could I fit two Aputure 300d's and the 36º spotlight (with all peripherals)?

The Pelican 1660 Case with Foam (Black) cannot accommodate two Aputure 300d lights, their accompanying peripherals, and an Aputure Spotlight Mount Set with a 36° Lens. Use two cases: one for the lights and one for the lens and peripherals.

Yes, the case can be checked as a piece of luggage and you will like be paying extra for size and weight, however, I have found the costs less than shipping with FedEx etc.

I have very curious question, and it seems no one ever mention? This kind of cases is to protect very delicate equipment such as Camera, lens, laptops, but....do anyone agrees with me. This on one hand it protects again scratch, bump etc...but along with that it will loosen most of the nuts that hold those components. When you drag those cases, vibrations will cause our expensive equipment to loosen their screw, nuts. I have one proof, one of my friend has a Canon lens, and one day the zoom just stuck. He did not know why, and almost waste $250 just for the camera shop to repair. I try few minutes and found out the tiny screw on the lens was loose due to the vibration of the Pelican while carry on. Same thing, he said his laptop has some parts moving inside. So, for short I don't think this Pelican is working, then how come they are so popular and expensive as well? To protect, yes, but not to drag on the ground like this, it should be lift and carry on your arm. Do I guess right?

The 1660 is massive. I use them for lights and TelePrompTer hardware. I carry my cameras in a 1510 Pelli case. I use them because the cases themselves are very solid. I travel around the world with these cases and Ive never had a problem. I dont know any case that can protect from vibration. Youre probably right about carrying the bodies in arms. My stuff is too heavy for all that. Regardless theres better case around.
