VariZoom VZ-Stealth-LX overview

  • 1Description

The Varizoom VZ-Stealth-LX is a LANC controller, which shares all the same features as the VZ-Stealth, while having a few additional enhancements for additional control. The three extra features include autofocus on/off, data on/off, and tape search. The throttle style zoom control makes steady zooms intuitive and easy. The entire unit can be attached easily to tripod handles, making it perfect for a wide variety of videography applications.

Pressure Sensitive Throttle
The VZ-Stealth-LX comes equipped with a pressure sensitive throttle. This allows users to vary zoom speeds for smooth, sustainable adjustments.

    VariZoom VZ-Stealth-LX reviews

VZStealthLX Zoom Controller is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Great, Not the Most Durable Got this about a year ago for the NX5U I use at my work. It's made shooting (especially live-to-tape recordings like seminars) much less of a hassle. Having all the controls I need (record, zoom, data) right at my hand is so much nicer for long shoots. My biggest complaint is the build quality. The housing for the controller is plastic, as is the back plate for clamping it, and neither feel especially sturdy (though I haven't broken them). However, I lost the T-bar cap for the zoom lever while transporting my tripod to a shoot (it just fell off). So now the zoom lever is simply a post that pokes my thumb a bit (though at least it's rounded). I'd still recommend this product for the price, but it's something worth noting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does The Job I purchased the VZ-Stealth-LX so that I'd be able to operate my Sony HXR-NX5U (the NX5U's remote only works when in front of the camera) while using my jib arm. Even though it's small, it feels solid and works very smoothly. I only tested it out when it first arrived to make certain that it functions properly, so I haven't used it in the field yet. I probably won't be using it with my tripod too often, because I'm comfortable with all of the NX5U's controls, but I know it's going to come in very handily when using the jib - rather than continually having to bring the camera down for adjustments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs as advertised I shoot archival videos for two local dance companies. I already had the older VZStealth without the autofocus toggle button. Since I zoom in and out so much with my Sony VX2000 set on manual focus, the button helps to sharpen the focus when I do zoom in. After so much zooming, the focus does drift even after having it serviced. Didn't notice it until I viewed my footage on large HD monitors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Essential for theater productions I've been using this with a Canon XA-20 for two years now, and have found the manual/auto focus toggle on this unit to be essential for shooting stage productions. Right hand is handling the zoom, left hand is riding the iris (spotlight setting is one-size-fits-all and not reliable for the productions I cover), and being able to toggle autofocus on and off while shooting makes it possible to hold a good focus especially during blackouts between scenes. Pros: variable zoom is good, autofocus toggle is great. Cons: I've docked it one star because the mounting arrangement is clunky (slow to mount) and it's way too easy to lose a nut getting it loose enough to go over the padded pan handle on my Manfrotto head -- a c-clamp like the Libec is a much better solution. XA 20 users should also know that the Data button does not work on this camera. Don't know about the XA30 but suspect it won't work on that one either. Final thought: the Stealth LX is definitely worth the extra cost to get the autofocus toggle.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The filmmakers makes the choice The panhandle camera control unit works well. There's one feature that could have been included for those of us who work in the Film industry using the old J-4's. That's a control modulator that regulates the speed of push-in's or pull-out's regardless of how far you press the lever. There was also a variable selection that indeed must be practiced with to make the pulls and pushes smooth. Now we don't have this choice. Perhaps you might suggest this to the manufacturer of the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So convenient... I use this zoom controller on my Sony HXR-NX5U and it works very well. Up until now I often struggled to do all things at the same time; panning, zooming, etc. With this controller attached to my tripod I'm in control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 2nd Stealth Controller... ...only because I wanted to upgrade from the basic VZ model to have autofocus control. This inexpensive controller will provide instant professionlism to your projects. It works perfectly with my new Canon XA10.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs to be sturdier and more durable I bought this unit about 10 months ago. In that time I am dealing with a cracked back plate on the tripod arm attachment. I shoot in cold temperatures and the backplate is made of plastic. They should make the back plate out of something less brittle and sturdier (Aluminium?). The crack happened within the first week of using the unit. Also the brass knob that sits on top of the zoom throttle has fallen off and has recently disappeared. I'm not sure why the throttle even needs to made of two separate parts, the throttle should be a one piece metal part. Other than the disappointing durability this unit works exactly as it is supposed to do. It records when it is supposed to record, it zooms when it is supposed to zoom etc... There are not a lot of options if you need a Canon/Sony LANC and I don't have experience with any of the others but I would consider this units durability if you plan to use this unit a lot out in the field. For more sedate use (i.e. indoors and stationary) than the unit is an easy reliable choice.I am the videographer for my sons hockey team so I am packing and unpacking my gear at about 60 to 70 games a year in cold arena's. I take very good care of my equipment so I don't believe I have mishandled this component. If this unit showed better durability for my use than I would easily give this a 5.
