Countryman EMW Overview

The Countryman EMW Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone is designed to reproduce vocals, musical instruments and ambient audio sources with pristine detail and minimal handling noise. The capsule is highly resistant to moisture making it a suitable solution for outdoor use, placement against skin, etc.

Clear audio reproduction with low rubbing and handling noise is a result of the EMW's omnidirectional polar pattern. The shelved frequency response features a smooth +6 dB boost between 2 kHz and 15 kHz. This is the standard response for lavaliers worn outside clothing (lapels, jackets, etc).

A wide variety of colors and connections are available, this version is black and features a 3-pin XLR connection.

Shelved Frequency Response
The EMW is available in three frequency response types and this version features a shelved frequency response that compensates for reflections lost when mounted outside clothing and fabric. The shelved response is standard for lavalier microphones worn on lapels, jackets, etc.
Unobtrusive Miniature Design
The square EMW lavalier is available in various colors that virtually render the entire microphone invisible against the skin. For more information on which color ear-set suits you best, refer to the Countryman support page.
Kevlar Cable
The attached cable is made of a durable, break-resistant Kevlar for rigorous use without shorts and wear.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
The EMW is credited with providing pristine audio with minimal handling and rubbing noise, due to its omnidirectional polar pattern.
Moisture Resistant
This square, moisture resistant capsule is ideal for use in humid conditions, on skin, outdoors, etc.

Safe and reliable as primary sound or as backup. Super easy and phantom power is enough. You must have one or two in your kit.

The best lavalier mic I've ever used or heard.

Perfect for filmmaking, interviews, vlogging or whatever. I've used a lot of mics of all kinds over the years as a recording engineer, producer and filmmaker and in my opinion Countryman makes the best lav mics on the market.

I am new to audio recording. I heard this requires phantom power. is phantom power the same for most audio recorders? Specifically, I have a Zoom H6. would all I need to do to make the Countryman lapel work is turn on Phantom Power? Or does it require another purchase to give it power?
Asked by: Tony
You are correct that it needs Phantom power. The H6 - and most other recorders that spot an XLR mic input - will provide Phantom power and no additional hardware will be required to power this mic.

Any opinions on the Shelved versus Peak frequency ...

Any opinions on the Shelved versus Peak frequency response? Do you find this version works okay behind clothes? Most of what I do will be behind clothes, but not always a lot of clothes. I don't want to buy a mic for every situation. In your opinions is it better to record with shelved and add EQ to the high-end later (if needed) or to record peaked and pull back EQ if needed?
Asked by: Nathan
Countryman describes the difference as follows: "Shelved for normal lavalier use, peaked for use behind clothing." Based on what you wrote you may be better off getting the peaked - as "most" is behind clothes - and you can always EQ back when used in situations where it is not under clothing. It is easier to take out frequencies, than adding missing frequencies. I hope this helps
