A Versatile Solution for Musicians and Content Creators
The black Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Microphone is designed to bring sonic performance distilled from the company's reputable studio condensers to the realm of home recording for podcasters, musicians, and content creators. The capsule features a low-mass, side-address diaphragm with a cardioid polar pattern for rejecting ambience and noise behind the mic, a welcome trait when tracking in untreated rooms. It comes with a pivoting stand mount for straightforward attachment to your existing mic stand.

The AT2020's extended, linear frequency response enables the flexibility to accurately reproduce signals from a wide variety of sources such as vocals, speech, and instruments. High SPL handling and wide dynamic range allow the AT2020 to capture loud signals with minimal noise and distortion. Since the AT2020 is a solid-state condenser with an XLR output, it should be mated to an XLR-equipped mic preamp capable of sending 48V phantom power.

Audio-Technica AT2020 Reviews

Nothing but praise so far

Haven't been using this microphone long enough to get a real grip on its ups and downs, but I can immediately tell compared to my previous microphone, a USB mic, that I am picking up more clear tones. More than that, the unpleasant noises that snuck in with recording are conspicuously absent. Despite the fact that purchasing this microphone in the end required me to replace nearly my entire audio setup, I consider it worthwhile.

Quality build

I use a mike for voice overs and connect the mike via a Behringer Q502USB mixer and I was plugging in a cheap mike into the phono jack which didn't give me a good sound. The Behringer has an XLR input so I wanted to try that. Did a lot of research on mikes and settled on this one. It was a good choice. I purchased the Kopul Studio Elite 4000 XLR cable along with the mike to make sure I had a quality cable connected to the mike. It's a condenser mike so it needs phantom power which the Behringer mixer supplies. The mike's cardiod pattern suppresses background noise not coming from the front of the mike. Note that you don't talk into the top of the mike, but rather into the side. Thus, the mike is optimized for sound coming directly in front of it. So far, I'm very happy with the mike.

Clean & Chrome!

It sounds clean and looks great in chrome! I even bought 2 and trying out stereo micing various sources. I'm using a standard hoop-type pop filter, which is working great on the plosives. But, I've got a couple large foam hats on the way, just so I can get a little closer with vocals.

This is my first condenser mic, but I have heard great things about AT in the past. I have owned multiple of their ATH 50s. Very quality products. This mic is no exception. I upgraded to this for my video conference setup and the sound quality is superb. I know must audio professionals know this but if this is your first mic, be sure to have all your cables, interfaces, and holding arms locked in to make unboxing day as smooth as possible. I am only about a month into using the mic but after about 30 hours of zoom and a few short tutorial style videos, I am still in love. I will update this review once I have had some more hours in this unit. I'll also post an raw audio clip for reference!

question

I have recently received a Audio tech AT2020 and plugged it in via USB to my windows 8 computer. I have noticed on a YouTube video it should have a light turn on. There is no light and it is not picking up any audio how ever my computer has recognized its plugged in and believes it to be both a mic and a speaker. any help please?
Asked by: Mir L.
This mic does not feature a USB connection. If you are using a USB audio interface, be sure to check if it is providing phantom power to this microphone.

How do you attach the mic mount to the mic stand? the "male" end on the stand is too big for the "female" end on the mic mount
Asked by: Brian
Hi Marty, Can you please provide a step-by-step video on how to do this? I've tried to attach the microphone per your instructions (removing the 5/8" to 3/8" adapter and either I'm an idiot or the reflection filter/microphone stand simply does not fit. It states in the instructions that if you are using a handheld-style or shotgun microphone to attach a mic clip (not included) to the 5/8" adapter. This kit is perfect but if I need to be an additional microphone clip, then that should have been included in the kit and the price adjusted accordingly. Thanks.

I had my company buy three of these mic sets and for some reason the audio volume dips during recordings. WE connected everything fine and plug it into Rodecaster pro but each time we do a podcast the volume dips and comes back up on a few seconds. Distance between speaker and mic has not changed, Could you say what could be the cause?
Asked by: Samantha
If you are using the RodeCaster Pro Integrated Podcast Production Studio, then the Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Microphones should be connected directly to the XLR mic inputs on the RodeCaster Pro with phantom power turned on. It sounds like you may have the compressor and/or master compressor effects turned on and possibly set too high. The compressor is used to smooth and balance the dynamic range in your audio so your voice is clear, punchy, and intelligible. It can even out the audio so the softest parts of your speech can be heard and the loudest parts of your speech will not be overpowering or distorted. The master compressor affects the entire output of your podcast, so if the problem occurs with all of the mics, that may be what is causing the issue. Check the settings on both the regular and master compressor effects and adjust them as needed. Here are links to Rode's online user guide which provides useful information and tutorial videos showing how to use the built-in effects and processors included with the RodeCaster Pro: https://rode.com/en/user-guides/rodecaster-pro/using-advanced-processing-and-effects https://rode.com/en/user-guides/rodecaster-pro/setting-up-microphone-channels
