Impact R144174 overview

  • 1Description

The Impact Collapsible Oval Reflector Disc (41 x 74") is a versatile lighting tool for in the field and in the studio. It allows you to bring out the shadow detail in your subject, using available or studio lighting. In addition, the colored surface allows you to modify the color of your subject. Your choice of color -- soft silver-gold or white -- will be determined by the lighting conditions, and your personal preference.

This oval 41 x 74" disc is suitable for a full length portrait, or a large size still-life setup. It folds down to 1/3 its open size, and comes with a storage sleeve. We suggest the purchase of a pivoting arm and stand, to hold the disc where needed -- especially if you are working without an assistant.

Soft Gold combines gold and silver, creating a warm, summery feel that works great with skin tones.
White produces an even, neutral-colored bounce light that works beautifully as a fill light source for both product shots and indoor/outdoor portraits.

    Collapsible Oval Reflector Disc - Soft Gold/White - 41x74" is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded Expectations One word of caution...this thing is big! Yes, I read the dimensions before purchasing, but it's huge when you're actually holding it. It's also very hard to control if you're outside and there is any wind (I got the reflector to use for outdoor portraits.) You can see the gold light reflected back on the subject really well, but the white reflected light is a little more difficult to gauge. The effect is much more subtle. I've used it in studio as a flash reflector, and it performed well. It is quite durable and holds up to regular use superbly. Some people have noted that it's hard to fold back up, but once you get the hang of it, it's no problem at all. I searched youtube for a video on how to fold a reflector, and that helped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy reflector, hard to fold! Maybe I just don't have the touch and maybe it's just because of the size of it (6 feet!) it's hard to fold. You really need to grip the frame tightly to get it to twist inside the fabric. Once you get it twisted it does the rest for you. Opening it is great because of how strong the frame is. It pops right open, but beware you aren't near any open beverages or small children because it definitely knock them over. It gives off a very nice color value and is made of a strong fabric. I like it but I think I'll need a smaller one for working in more confined spaces and operating without an assistant. 6 feet just might be a little unwieldy at times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to fold (for some) The only thing this reflector is lacking is a velcro strap or two on one of its long sides, for securing to a light stand. (There is a loop on top for hanging from a cross-bar.) Expertise: Professional Problems Encountered: I read the previous review before buying this reflector, and was consequently a little hesitant, but it fits my needs and I'm mechanically inclined, so I bought one, prepared to figure out how to collapse it when I got it.It arrived this week, so I spent 1/2 hour last night trying to collapse it by myself, to no avail. (I'm very pleased with the way it stood up to the abuse I gave it trying to get it to collapse.)This morning, I asked my lovely, mechanically challenged, wife to give me a hand with it, and she said let me try it first. She successfully folded it on her first attempt (in about 5 seconds). So now I'm very satisfied with the reflector, I have newfound admiration for my better half, and I plan to have her teach me how to do it after work tonight!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product This is a great reflector for outdoor use, especially full length portraits in harsh lighting. However, it is quite large and you will need an assistant to hold it while you take photographs. Overall it gives great results!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Solution for Lighting Up Faces I desperately needed to light up faces while doing videos outside with sunlight coming from behind the subject. I recently did a low-budget film that was hampered by this problem. This reflector fixes that problem and it's wide enough to light up two or three people. Practice folding it in private so that you won't look like an idiot. Just put it in the corner of your work space and try to practice folding it once a day for a week. Fold it the same way each time (ex. Gold side to the inside) and you will find that the metal hoop develops a memory.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It just works, great backup solution I use it as a back-up and more portable solution to my larger Lastolite Skylite Medium Reflector kit (uses an aluminum frame). Folds down to a small diameter and just works. Only complaint is that the black ring around the outside of the reflector is starting to fray. Also, my reflector came with a big mark on the white side of the panel. For the price I paid for this, it wasn't worth it to return the item. I've used this as a white background in a pinch, and it worked surprisingly well. Very very useful and a must for any portrait photographer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job well I use this to bounce light in for fill, from sources in the scene (sun, sky) or lights in my setup. Great large, neutral color bounce source Reflections from the silver side can be spotty and hard to control, but do have more punch and reach which can be a lifesaver. Springs out to a firm flat sheet, not too flimsy. It can be tricky to fold back up -- the included instructions give the correct method, and it DOES work, but sometimes can be balky. With practice it becomes quicker and easier to find the right twist of the wrist.
