Essential if you set the camera on a tripod and use the self-timer or a remote release to get yourself in the picture, or if for any other reason your eye is not at the eyepiece blocking extraneous light that could affect exposure. But not necessary if you set exposure manually. Easy to lose and won't likely clip securely enough to most camera straps.

question

Will this cap fit a Nikon FE standard eyepiece or diopter?
Asked by: James F.
No, the Nikon DK-8 Eyepiece Shield would not be compatible for use with the Nikon FE 35mm film SLR camera. Nikon states the above camera has been out of production for over 30 years and there are no eyepiece shield or shutters for the Nikon FE. As an alternative, you may either modify an eyepiece to block out light (i.e., purchase the Nikon Finder Eyepiece for FM, FE & FA Series Cameras (Replacement), B&H # NIEPFM2, then use a Sharpie marker or gaffer's tape to black out the eyepiece and use this when taking long exposures or when not behind the camera with your eye to the viewfinder), or use a dark cloth over the camera to block out light during long exposure images.
