Nikon HN-1 overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Nikon HN-1 reviews

HN-1 Lens Hood is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for AF 24mm f/2.8 I am using this with Nikkor AF 24mm f/2.8, and keeping it permanently attached, except when using the filter mentioned below. Positives: - Metal construction. - Screw-in type. Negatives: - Seems too narrow, but I'm sure the Nikon engineers knew what they were doing when they designed it. - CANNOT BE USED with Nikon Circular Polarizer II 52mm attached to above lens, as it will cause vignetting, based on Nikon's instruction manual for the CP-II filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Hood Used it with my 24mm/2.8 AIS and 28mm/2.0 AIS. The Nikon 52mm cap (snap-on or pinch type) fits onto the inner circumference. I found the 72mm snap-on cap not a very good fit over the outer circumference. Haven't tried the 72mm pinch type cap to see if there is any difference. Protects both lenses from physical damage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ...update to my previous review. The optional Nikon 72mm Snap-On Lens Cap does not fit snuggly to this hood, even though the hood is made of metal. Would have been nice if it did, as it would have prevented dust from accumulating on the inside of the hood, and easier to snap on/off. I returned mine within an hour of purchase after multiple attempts to attached it with a perfect fit. Btw, on a side note, the 77mm Snap-On Lens Cap does fit perfectly on the metal HN-23 hood. A must have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth to buy This Nikon lens hood is for the AF NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8D. It's metal. It does what it's supposed to do; prevents unwanted stray light. It also provides some protection, which is quite valuable especially if you don't like filters. I personally don't prefer UV filters because of the flare they cause. For me, having a filter on is like shooting through a window, windshield or plexiglass in a hockey arena; something I'd do only when I really have to. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does it's job. It's moderately difficult to screw on in as far as the threads are tiny and difficult to align. Once you fumble around enough to get the threads catching though it screws on easily. It's a little wider than I thought it would be considering the size of the lens and compared to other lenses and lens hoods I have. So a hair bulkier than I thought it would be. It's metal so I expect it to last. It didn't really strike me as either heavy nor light.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good, bad, not ugly The good--over the years, I've learned to stay with Nikon accessories for my Nikon cameras / lenses. I've also, although it is not always recommended, put hoods and protective filters (preferably Nikon NC) on my lenses. The bad--I prefer hoods that can be reversed and stored on the lens. This hood cannot. Not ugly--I like it. It is what it is. I have no complaints

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small Lens Hood I use the product on the lens constantly and never take it off. It is small and very light. It is so small that I'm concerned that it actually works as intended. Also, for this size lens, I like the rubber hood that comes with the 50 1.4 better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what you think Pretty good lens hood, does what it should and blocks out flare. I'm not a fan of the screw attachement (it means I have to unscrew it to add/subtract filters). But its the only one I could use for the 24mm so not a lot of choice.
