Tivoli Model One overview

  • 1Description

If you're looking for performance and simplicity but have little space then the black ash / black Tivoli Model One AM/FM Table Radio will suit you just fine. Behind this sleek exterior is quality in sound. A furniture-grade, handmade wood cabinet works as an acoustically inert housing unit. The heavy-magnet, long-throw 3" (7.6 cm) driver works hand in hand with a multistage frequency contouring circuit that adjusts the output over half-octave increments.

Model One uses a GaAs MES-FET mixer for FM tuning to increase clarity and enhance reception. The geared-down 5:1 tuning ratio adds to the ease and accuracy of channel tuning while the amber tuning light keeps track of your channel selection.

Dual Purpose Cabinet
The furniture-grade, handmade wood cabinet is stunning in appearance but also performs double duty working as an acoustically inert housing unit
3-Inch Driver
The heavy-magnet, long-throw, 3" (7.6 cm) driver is allied with a multistage frequency contouring circuit that adjust to the speaker's output over half-octave increments giving you an accurate tonal balance and bass response
State of the Art Tuner
Rather than being satisfied with an integrated circuit Henry Kloss has incorporated state of the art technology into his Model One with the addition of the GaAs MES-FET mixer for better reception and increased clarity
5:1 Tuning Ratio
The geared-down 5:1 tuning ratio permits easy and accurate tuning and the addition of an amber tuning indicator makes finding your favorite channel even easier
Henry Kloss Analog AM/FM Tuner
Built-in AM and FM antennas give you superb reception but if you happen to be in a reception-poor area then the 75-ohm jack lets you attach and external FM antenna for even better reception
With just three knobs adorning the face of this unit, it is a sleek-looking component that anyone can easily understand and use
For those moments when you want a little privacy or quiet time, connect your headphones to the headphone jack and escape from life's daily distractions, or better yet, let the kids enjoy their favorite channel while you get some peace and quiet

    Tivoli Model One reviews

Model One AM/FM Table Radio (Black Ash / Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better than I expected I was looking for something to put into a newly renovated (still in the process, actually) kitchen/dining space. After some frustrating research into more complicated sound systems with wall-mounted or wireless speakers and AM/FM/CD/MP3/internet streaming capabilities, I was ready to give up. And then I came across the Model One, which got me thinking about a basic radio rather than a sophisticated system. After more research on a number of other options, I finally settled on the Model One. I liked what I was reading in reviews, and I really found myself attracted to its simplicity: two small knobs, one big dial, no remotes, or displays or menus ... a child could operate this thing. When it arrived, I was a bit taken aback at its size, especially the size of the speaker. I knew the dimensions from the specs, but knowing and seeing are diffent things. This thing is TINY. Could it really sound good? I figured there must be some review inflation going on, so I tried to keep my expectations in check. It will sound fine, I thought, maybe even pretty good. But it's just a radio with a small speaker, so I can't really expect much, can I? I found a home for the Model One on the counter, plugged it in, turned it on and dialed in a station (FM) I listen to a lot.And then I smiled. I couldn't help it. The station came in perfectly and the sound was full and clear and much bigger and better than I could possibly expect. Better sounding than the boombox we have with two speakers each bigger than the single speaker in the Model One. I walked around the room (it's about a 14x21 space) and was reminded how nice it can be to not have to sit in a sweet spot to hear good sound (one of the strengths of mono). I turned up the volume and was rewarded with just more of the same room filling sound, no speaker failure or distorting. Amazing. Other stations came in cleanly and sounded just as good.Once I started to get past my surprise (the honeymoon phase was over ... so soon?), I did notice a slight boominess to the sound, but I wondered if this might be due to the space rather than the radio/speaker. The quality of any sound source is highly dependent on the environment in which it operates, and I realized that temporary counter (thin plywood paneling) that the radio was sitting on was probably not a good complement for the downward firing bass port on the Model One. I took a couple of wood shims and angled the radio up about 10 degrees, and the sound opened up a bit and the boominess went away. When the new counter (quartz) goes in, I'll likely have to make some other adjustments. Anyone who has trouble with the sound of this radio (with clear reception) would do well to consider where and how their radio is placed. Too much bass? Move it away from walls and corners, or change change the surface on which it rests. Should you have to do this for a radio that costs this much? Show me a radio that doesn't sound different in different spaces or in different positions in a given space. Go ahead. The Model One has connections for external antennas (AM and FM), but I haven't tried them because the internal tuner has been so good for me. Usually my ears are a good enough judge of how well dialed in a station is, but the yellow LED is a useful touch. The dial is solid and turns smoothly -- it's a quality feel. I have not used the AUX-In port for an external player. When I chose the Model One, I thought this might be a useful feature but I simply haven't felt the need to use it. I use the Model One for its radio, and I'm happy with that.I can confirm a small issue with my particular unit that a few others have mentioned in reviews on other sites: the tuning dial reads about 1 MHz off from the actual station tuned. This is not common, but I'm obviously not alone. There is supposedly a fix that involves opening up the box and adjusting a variable capacitor with a small (plastic) screwdriver .... I originally thought that if I experienced this I would care about it more than I actually do, so I'm not planning on trying this (and invalidating the warrantee) any time soon. The difference in reading is consistent (thus easy to compensate for) and I don't change stations that often anyway. The only other negative I have is that the power cord is too long for me! I think it's 9' long, and my outlet is about 18 inches from the radio, which means there's rather a lot of cord bundled up on the counter. Of course, this length could easily be a plus in someone else's world.I have had the Model One for a few weeks now and I turn it on every day. I'm reminded of my childhood and my parents listening to the radio every morning at breakfast. I've been reminded that a good radio station can connect me to a world in ways that a personal music collection can't. And I'm reminded that quality products are still out there for those that are willing to look for them. The Model One is small, looks great, is easy to use, tunes beautifully and sounds better than it has a right to. It's been, quite literally, the perfect addition to the new kitchen. It's not often I purchase something that makes me happy every time I use it, but this little box does just that!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Portable. Classy. Rich Sound. I ordered my Model One to place in my bathroom in hopes of enjoying news radio in the morning and the occasional iPod plug-in for weekends. The functionality and ease of use are great. The sound quality is clear and strong with strong bass output considering the size of this unit. I would have preferred a bass setting switch on the rear - a low/med/high output mode as talk radio is too bassy at times making for unclear dialogue during the shower. Other than that, a great unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect garage tunes This little dynamo has replaced the multiple cheapo boom boxes that I have wasted money on in the past. The sound is rich, clear and full. It is more than adequate for casual listening in the 2 bay garage. As we live rural, I am impressed at how this radio can really pull in the signals. With the ratio on the dial, it is easy to fine tune. Tivoli did their homework on this one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from great reciever, OK sound The looks, size and receiver lock-in are great. But, on the kitchen counter, even as far from the wall as we could practically put it and with the bass port plugged, we found the bass so exaggerated that my wife wanted to return it. Then, with the port still plugged, I put it up on the refrigerator (further from the wall and higher, both reducing bass emphasis) and it sounds quite good to us now. So we really are happy, but it took some tweaking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Expected I bought this radio for my small apartment, and it's been even better than I expected so far. I listen to NPR on the radio in the mornings, and the reception is good even without an external antenna. I also use the auxiliary input to listen to music via my computer and iPod. Not only is the Model One impressive in terms of clarity, but it also provides surprisingly rich and warm bass for such a small, single speaker. The build quality is also very nice, and the black finish on the wood is quite sophisticated.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent quality - Bass too loud The fabrication, feel, and sound is excellent. Nice little kitchen radio. Bass too loud though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from big little radio clear, rich, full sound with none of the scratchy, harsh or tinny noise you usually get.
    Date published: 2008-12-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Room-filling Sound We were used to listening to music using our computer and our computer's speakers - not great sound. The Tivoli, by contrast, fills the house with beautiful sound providing hearty bass out of its wooden body. It doesn't hurt at all that the radio is so great looking, either. We purchased an AM/FM antenna to go with the radio so it pulls in the stations we want with no problems.
