Radial Engineering ProAV1 overview

  • 1Description

The ProAV1 from Radial Engineering is a passive direct box designed for multi-media applications with the audio-video integrator in mind. The unit features a variety of stereo inputs that are merged via a resistive mixer to mono, greatly simplifying signal management.

To eliminate the need for various adaptor, a "Swiss Army" array of connections are provided, including 1/4" for instruments, RCA and 1/8" connectors for consumer electronics and computers and a +4dB XLR input for professional systems. The front panel connectors can also be used as thru-puts to allow multiple patch points.

Custom wound transformers are employed that are able to withstand exceptionally hot levels while maintaining linearity from 20Hz to 18.5kHz. The resulting smooth Bessel curve is warm and natural, making the AV1 particularly adept at handling digital sources that can sound harsh. Transformer isolation adds the benefit of eliminating ground loops that cause audio hum and buzz and video hum bars or snow.

The ProAV1 is ideal for events that interlace audio with video where music sources can include iPods, CD players and video decks.

    Radial Engineering ProAV1 reviews

ProAV1 Direct Box is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't tell you how, but this device solves some audio issues Needed to solve my dilemma of going output of my old laptop to my sportscasting gear and eliminating the overdriven audio. This gizmo did it. I'm not a techie, so I can't tell you why, and quite frankly I don't care. I just needed my problem solved. Unless a knowledgeable person can dumb down and post as to why this works for a particular audio situation, I'll get lost in a paragraph. If you've tried every patch cord/adapter configuration trying to get sound from A to B and can't get the audio to come through clean, read up on this device. It might help solve such an issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Tool for Your Kit The ProAV1 is the little brother of the ProAV2, a similar product from Radial Engineering. The ProAV1 sports a nice array of inputs that can all be summed down to one (mono) XLR output. This Direct Box sums your stereo signals to mono, so it's great for a simple iPod connection or even playing music/videos over your system. If you're looking for true stereo output, you'll need to look into the ProAV2. However, if you're short on inputs, or you system runs in mono anyway, then the ProAV1 is a great tool for you. I'm rating this at 4-stars only because it would be great if we could get a combination of the ProAV1 and ProAV2 all in the same box. But, sacrifices must be made and this direct box is more than worth it! As both a professional musician and 10-year veteran of the music industry, this product comes highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Swiss Army Knife of AV tools I use this product to eliminate noise coming from a source such as a PC/laptop when I want to grab the audio from these sources. I already use another device to grab video; however, when I grab audio from PC/Laptop, horrible digital noise carries through. Using the Ground Lift option on this device eliminates the noise completely. Great selection of inputs. Wish it was in a different color! Oh well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product A real Swiss Army Knife for audio. Had a big production doing video and needed to do a simple interface with exisiting live sound reinforcement. This all in one box did a great job. The problem that I usually face is ground loop but the Pin 1 lift on the box is easily able to eliminate the problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Computer/Ipod Direct Box! This unit has exceptional sound quality for a very affordable price. It is rugged, reliable and easy to use. I have several of these and they are used regularly without any issues. You can never go wrong with Radial products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent DI for multimedia I really like this DI. There is some discussion about whether you really need a DI for connecting small electronics to PAs and other equipment with balanced XLR inputs. Simply put...YES you do. Unbalanced line level signals can and will experience signal drop (especially if it's a stereo signal simply mated to XLR), feedback, and could even damage the PA it's connected to. This little wonder solves all of this. With a plethora of connections for consumer A/V products and 1/4 in for instruments, this truly is the Swiss Army Knife of DIs. Sound quality is good in the venues I've tried. So far I can tell you I haven't heard this add a lick of noise. Radial does make better quality options for professional users playing big venues on big systems. For my use however, (connecting laptops to PAs) presentations in panel rooms and convention halls, this is the perfect solution! It has an on board stereo to mono filter that isolates each channel and is isolated from the balanced side of the unit as well. It has a ground lift to prevent ground loops. Great care and thought has gone into this unit. It's all steel case makes is hefty but also near indestructible as well as providing an EM cage to prevent an noise from nearby electrical cabling from entering the internal components. Of course it's a passive DI so it will function on powered and unpowered mic lines alike. All-in-all, this is a versatile and reasonably priced solution to get your ipod or laptop to talk safely through professional audio installations.
