Radial Engineering ProAV1 Overview

The ProAV1 from Radial Engineering is a passive direct box designed for multimedia applications with the audio/video integrator in mind. The unit features a variety of mono and stereo inputs that are merged via a resistive mixer to mono, greatly simplifying signal management.

To eliminate the need for various adapters, an array of connections are provided, including 1/4" for instruments, RCA and 3.5mm connectors for consumer electronics and computers, and a +4 dB XLR input for professional systems. The front-panel connectors can also be used as thru-puts to allow multiple patch points.

Custom wound transformers are able to withstand exceptionally hot levels while maintaining linearity from 20 Hz to 18.5 kHz. The resulting smooth Bessel curve is warm and natural, making the ProAV1 particularly adept at handling digital sources that can sound harsh. Transformer isolation adds the benefit of eliminating ground loops that cause audio hum and buzz and video hum.

The ProAV1 is ideal for events that interlace audio with video where audio sources can include smartphones, MP3 players, and video devices.

Great device, poor packaging

The DI box appears to work well. However, it was not packaged properly and arrived opened on one end of the box. Thankfully, nothing was missing. That is the reason for 4 stars.

Can't tell you how, but this device solves some audio issues

Needed to solve my dilemma of going output of my old laptop to my sportscasting gear and eliminating the overdriven audio. This gizmo did it. I'm not a techie, so I can't tell you why, and quite frankly I don't care. I just needed my problem solved. Unless a knowledgeable person can dumb down and post as to why this works for a particular audio situation, I'll get lost in a paragraph. If you've tried every patch cord/adapter configuration trying to get sound from A to B and can't get the audio to come through clean, read up on this device. It might help solve such an issue.

Can I take phone calls using a rca to 3.5 mm out to phone?
Asked by: Solomon
By using this device with a smartphone, the caller could be sent to a mixer/ recorder directly. The caller could be recorded on a separate track of audio on a recorder. The caller would only hear you through the mic of the phone, as though you were on speaker phone. To make the call recording easier and have the caller here your mics audio, you may want to purchase this new Zoom podcasting recorder: B&H # ZOPTP4PCREC.

So the 1/4" thru port acts as both an output bypass and and a single channel input that sums a signal sent out the XLR output?

The Radial Engineering ProAV1 Passive Multimedia Direct Box (B&H # RAPROAV1) features front-panel connectors that can also be used as throughputs to allow multiple patch points. A summed mono output is available via the balanced XLR output.

question

ProAV1 Can this unit output to a laptop's 1/8 microphone input for recording audio from a mixer?
Asked by: Stephen
No. The Pro AV1 converts consumer input (1/8) to balanced out (XLR) - the opposite of what you want. Radial makes the J-ISO and Pro-ISO that will do what you want. The J-ISO uses a Jensen transformer and is the one you want for studio recording. The J-PRO is good for broadcast use for recording vocal range audio and is cheaper than the J-PRO.
