Can I take phone calls using a rca to 3.5 mm out to phone?
By using this device with a smartphone, the caller could be sent to a mixer/ recorder directly. The caller could be recorded on a separate track of audio on a recorder. The caller would only hear you through the mic of the phone, as though you were on speaker phone. To make the call recording easier and have the caller here your mics audio, you may want to purchase this new Zoom podcasting recorder: B&H # ZOPTP4PCREC.

So the 1/4" thru port acts as both an output bypass and and a single channel input that sums a signal sent out the XLR output?
The Radial Engineering ProAV1 Passive Multimedia Direct Box (B&H # RAPROAV1) features front-panel connectors that can also be used as throughputs to allow multiple patch points. A summed mono output is available via the balanced XLR output.

question
ProAV1 Can this unit output to a laptop's 1/8 microphone input for recording audio from a mixer?
No. The Pro AV1 converts consumer input (1/8) to balanced out (XLR) - the opposite of what you want. Radial makes the J-ISO and Pro-ISO that will do what you want. The J-ISO uses a Jensen transformer and is the one you want for studio recording. The J-PRO is good for broadcast use for recording vocal range audio and is cheaper than the J-PRO.
