Nikon R1C1 Overview

The Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System (a.k.a. Macro Kit A) is a macro flash solution for i-TTL capable cameras that do not feature a built-in flash (e.g. D2X, D2H/D2Hs, F6). The kit is fully compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System and Advanced Wireless Lighting system when used with compatible cameras and/or flashes.

The kit's main components consist of the SX-1 Attachment Ring that attaches to the lens filter treads via an adapter ring (included), two SB-R200 wireless macro flash heads, and the SU-800 Commander Unit. The SX1 accommodates up to eight SB-R200 Speedlights off-camera and up to four on-camera.

This solution enables excellent close-up lighting control with exceptional flexibility and innovative options. When using the SU-800 with cameras that are not compatible with i-TTL flash control, only close-up flash operation is possible using the optional SC-30 TTL Cord.

Flexible Control
The built-in Speedlights of the D200, D70s, or D70 serve as the system's Master controller. For non i-TTL cameras, the SC30 sync cord can be used for off-camera control.
The SX-1 Attachment Ring can accept up to eight SB-R200s and can be attached to a tripod for remote lighting.
Creative Lighting System
Supports the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) and compatible CLS cameras.
Built-in target light and AF Illuminator allow for proper position of Speedlight on the subject as well as autofocus operation in low light situations.
Accurate i-TTL flash control achieved through flash exposure monitoring control.
Can be set to one of three Speedlight Groups (A,B, and C).
Offers four independent channels for competitive shooting environments.
Auto FP High-Speed Sync; use with fast shutter speeds achieves effective blurring of out-of-focus background elements.
FV lock holds flash value, enabling recomposition before shooting.
Flash head tilts down (toward the optical axis) to 60° with click stops at every 15°, or up to 45° (in the opposite direction) with click stops at every 15°.

Purchased for macro, didn't want to get into third party issues so I went with Nikon. Works well, expensive but it works. Seems delicate but we will see how it holds up..

As I did not even get to use the R1C1.... I purchased and returned three within the last month for the same reason, the flag battery cover was either broken or would not close properly after having to forcedly open it. The build quality for the price is very disappointing.

Very poor quality

I have purchased are returned two of these unit in. the last 2 week. Both times one of the flash units would not power on and the battery cover seems to be the culprit as it does not slide back into place easily. I'm going to try one more time Nikon 3rd strike and you are out!

No user manual or warranty info came with my new speedlight

It's impossible to give a review when I haven't been able to use the product. Nikon always includes warranty info, and a users manual. Mine came with neither. Unable to obtain any help from B&H due to religious holiday ( Phone is answering with a recording, and E-mail has been blocked ). I am very disappointed with the lack of service. I'm wondering if this is a black market speed light.

I am a life long hobby photographer and have always enjoyed macro work. I debated on getting this kit as its not inexpensive. I finally gave in and added one to my gear. I have zero regrets. For the work I do this thing is the best. I previously was using a good quality ring light flash and was mostly happy with how it worked compared to using normal flashes which are often just too powerful up close. This flash has solved all my problems and produces outstanding results, much better than the ring light. As others have mentioned you can control it with the built in flash on some Nikon models. That said I still like using the dedicated controller as it has more options and works with my D500 and Z body cameras that lack a hot shoe. This kit has a lot of bits and pieces which gives you great flexibility and control. Of course you can add even more speed lights using the controller giving you endless combinations of lighting. As a serious hobbyist I greatly enjoy this system. If you enjoy or use macro shooting I would recommend you learn more about this system and what you can do with it. As they say, You get what you pay for and I would not hesitate to buy this system again.

question

Is there a Hot Shoe Adapter that will allow the R1C1 to be used on a Sony A7RIII?
Asked by: Mike
When mixing brands, the rule of thumb is the flash will go off at the right time however there will be no TTL. That is the case here. We have not heard or tested this combination so we are not 100% that it will fire. You have our 30 day return policy to consider. https://bhpho.to/2bxrYlG

I plan to use R1C1 photographing portraits with Nikon Z lens 24-70 2.8s which requires 82mm adapter ring but it is not included into the kit. What are my options given I have not found an adapter ring of that size?
Asked by: Sergiy
Unfortunately there is no adapter to use the Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System directly on a 82mm thread. The best option would be to use a 82-77mm Step-Down Ring like this Sensei, BH #SESDR8277 (https://bhpho.to/3yUwwcT). Keep in mind this may cause vignetting as this is a smaller diameter than the front element of the lens.

question

I have a nikon D800. I'm trying to decide between the R1C1 and the R1. What factors would aid in making a decision?Thank you
Asked by: Anonymous
The R1C1 comes with the SU-800 commander. Since the Nikon D800 has capability to be used as a commander for i-TTL, you do not necessarily need this piece, and could use the Nikon R1 just fine: http://bhpho.to/18Pm2rv
