Nikon R1C1 Overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System (a.k.a. Macro Kit A) is a macro flash solution for i-TTL capable cameras that do not feature a built-in flash (e.g. D2X, D2H/D2Hs, F6). The kit is fully compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System and Advanced Wireless Lighting system when used with compatible cameras and/or flashes.

The kit's main components consist of the SX-1 Attachment Ring that attaches to the lens filter treads via an adapter ring (included), two SB-R200 wireless macro flash heads, and the SU-800 Commander Unit. The SX1 accommodates up to eight SB-R200 Speedlights off camera, and up to four on camera.

This solution enables excellent close-up lighting control with exceptional flexibility and innovative options. When using the SU-800 with cameras that are not compatible with i-TTL flash control, only close-up flash operation is possible using the optional SC-30 TTL Cord.

Flexible Control
The built-in Speedlights of the D200, D70s or D70 serve as the system's Master controller. Or, for non i-TTL cameras, the SC30 sync cord can be used for off-camera control.
The SX-1 Attachment Ring can accept up to eight SB-R200s and can be attached to a tripod for remote lighting.
Creative Lighting System
Supports the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) and compatible CLS cameras
Built-in target light and AF Illuminator allows for proper position of Speedlight on the subject as well as autofocus operation in low light situations
Accurate i-TTL flash control achieved through flash exposure monitoring control
Can be set to one of three Speedlight Groups (A,B and C)
Offers four independent channels for competitive shooting environments
Auto FP High-Speed Sync; use with fast shutter speeds achieves effective blurring of out-of-focus background elements
FV lock holds flash value, enabling recomposition prior to shooting
Flash head tilts down (toward the optical axis) to 60° with click stops at every 15°, or up to 45° (in the opposite direction) with click stops at every 15°

    Nikon R1C1 Reviews

R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from a medical photographer's ultimate tool i am a us navy biomedical photographer for 7 years now and this is the best and the most versatile macro light set up out there. the wireless capability opens up new lighting possibilities in macro photography. i have used this light in the operating room for intra operative cases, documenting medical legal cases, forensic pathology, orthognathic/dental photography and a lot of specimen photography. this outstanding piece of technology does it all. by the way, i took a still life photo using this set up and people are asking me on what kind of powerful light did i use and they always look perplexed after i told them that i only used this set up. =)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not just for macro. I have taken a lot of hand-held portraits of family using this system with a D700, and lenses used include an AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8D, a Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D, and I will also be using my Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D. I like the seamless integration with my other CLS system flashes (SB-900, SB-800, and SB-700). The included filters for use on the SB-R200 make color correction fairly simple. Using the 60mm lens requires the use of the UR-5 adapter ring. Having the 60 mm lens with the attached SX-1 ring in close proximity to the camera body takes a little getting used to. While it is well balanced, it is not the most natural feeling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific accessory I use the R1C1 in a variety of ways, but mostly for lighting small products and macro nature photography. They are amazingly easy to use and seem endlessly adaptable. The setup comes with all possible accessories for mounting the ring to lenses, gelling flashes, diffusing etc. It comes with a terrific case and some smaller cases for fitting in camera bags. I have a D300, so I don't technically need the SU-800 controller, because the setup comes with a mount to block my built in speedlight. But the su-800 is so easy to use and intuitive I'm glad I spent the extra money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far it has met my expectations! I am using the SU-800 commander from the kit on my Nikon D50 to control my SB-800 flash off camera. I used the kit this past weekend to shoot some items for online auction. I used both flashes on their stands and positioned one at the front and one towards the back to provide some rim - worked great. I tried using the kit flashes at about 30 feet in the dark and they would not fire. They were on the ground and I was on a tripod. When I sat on the ground they fired a few times. I am sure that the sensor could not pick up the signal. My fault - I would need to put the flashes higher. Very satisifed so far!! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective and Versatile This is a perfectly built unit for lighting directly in front of your macro lens. The ability to change the position of the flashes on the ring as well as the angle is inspiring. The possibility of adding additional flashes is comforting. The versatility of being able to use these units off the camera and in combination with existing flashes from my collection is astounding. I was initially interested in a couple of the pieces individually. Once I started pricing them, I realized what a great deal the R1C1 was and decided that I had to have it. I really think this item has been under-marketed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Flash System From Nikon This Macro Flash System is great because: 1) Wireless. Another brands still use cables brings a lot of problems for any one 2) Easy Setup. This amazing System is also very easy to set up and require a few moments to SetUp and are On The Go to make your Macro Photos 3) Easy to Use. Ok ITS EASY but careful you must know how to adjust the Light. You Can divide the amount of light of each flash head this make simple to make effects and shadows and you can use the diffuser and th support to use the heads without mounting into the lenses. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile System I use this product for macro photography of small objects. I have particularly enjoyed using it to photograph small insects as they pollinate wildflowers. The flash is very versatile; the flash units can be mounted on the ring or used off ring. I typically like to keep one on the ring and hold the second one by hand. I have used this flash to illuminate the interior of flowers. You can hand hold one flash for back or sidelighting or from any angle you choose. I have been able to achieve excellent close-ups of insects that surpass what I have been able to do in the past. The wireless aspect is nice. No wires to fool with. Keep extra batteries on hand; if you do a lot of shooting, especially rapid fire, you will need them. Cons: The flash unit on the front of the camera can be bulky; be careful when adjusting your tripod or moving from one location to another. It is not that hard to install or operate. One last thing, if you are going to use it with the Nikon 60 mm Macro, make sure you order the adapater ring that mates this flash to that particular camera. This ring can be ordered in the accessory section for the R1C1. If you are using the 105 mm Nikon macro, you will need an adapter ring for that lens in order to use the autofocus selection on that lens. For macro, I recommend manual focus only. Autofocus works with my 60 mm OK -and sometimes you need it for fast moving insects - but manual is probably best when doing most macros. The 60mm adapter ring is Nikon designated SY - 1- 72; and for the 105 mm it is SY - 1-62.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System The R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System allows you to totally own the light when shooting macros and close-ups. Doesn't matter what the sunlight is doing. They overpower the sun at close range - giving you luscious black and dark backgrounds so you don't need to perform digital magic in order for your subject to stand out. ISO 100, f/16, 1/200 second at 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm) - no problem! Yes, a bit of weight at the far end of the macro lens - if you hand hold. On a tripod, with or wighout a focussing rail, they do nothing but provide even, smooth, wonderful light.

Is there a Hot Shoe Adapter that will allow the R1C1 to be used on a Sony A7RIII?
    Asked by: Mike
When mixing brands, the rule of thumb is the flash will go off at the right time however there will be no TTL. That is the case here. We have not heard or tested this combination so we are not 100% that it will fire. You have our 30 day return policy to consider.

I have a nikon D800. I'm trying to decide between the R1C1 and the R1. What factors would aid in making a decision?Thank you
    Asked by: Anonymous
The R1C1 comes with the SU-800 commander. Since the Nikon D800 has capability to be used as a commander for i-TTL, you do not necessarily need this piece, and could use the Nikon R1 just fine:

Is this flash compatible with a fully manual macro lens with no communication with the camera?
    Asked by: Allan K.
Yes, this flash will still work regardless of the lens attached. The metering and TTL systems may not, however. But you could use the flash manually at the very least.
