Nikon 4804 R1 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up System (a.k.a. Macro Kit B) is a complete flash solution for cameras that feature both the Commander mode and include a built-in flash. The kit is fully compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System and Advanced Wireless Lighting system when used with compatible cameras and/or flashes.

The kit's main components consist of the SX-1 Attachment Ring that attaches to the lens filter threads via an adapter ring (included), and two SB-R200 wireless macro flash heads. The SX-1 Attachment Ring can accept up to eight SB-R200s and can be attached to a tripod for remote lighting.

The R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight Flash System has a Guide No. 66'/20 m at 24mm, with both heads.

This solution enables excellent close-up lighting control with exceptional flexibility and innovative options.

Note: For cameras that do not feature the commander mode, but that are i-TTL compatible (e.g. D50), please see R1C1 kit (#4803).

Flexible Control
The built-in Speedlights of the D800, D700, D600, D300, D300S, D7100, D7000, and D90 serve as the system's Master controller. Or, for non i-TTL cameras, the SC30 sync cord can be used for off-camera control.
Creative Lighting System
Supports the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) and compatible CLS cameras
Built-in target light and AF Illuminator allows for proper position of Speedlight on the subject as well as autofocus operation in low light situations
Accurate i-TTL flash control achieved through flash exposure monitoring control

    Nikon 4804 R1 reviews

    4804 R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome System This is an awesome macro flash system. I don't think there is any product available that can beat it when it comes to hand held macro work. With the addition of the SU-800 flash controller, which basically makes it a R1-C1 kit, you get access to the FP mode and flash sync at ALL shutter speeds. The hardware is plenty durable enough, unless you drop or throw your camera around. The system case is quite nice as well. This system also works nicely for table top studio work. Overall a well designed, flexible, and very usable system. And, surprisingly, I have taken over 300 shots on one set of the CR123A batteries and they are still going strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Just for Macro! I've used this speedlight system for both macro work and indoor photography. Obviously, it's made for macro, but I recently took it to an indoor pool and put my SB-600 on the lifeguard's chair, then used the two SB-R200s mounted on the lens... at 105mm on my D80, my daughter filled the frame and was properly lit with no shadows at 5-10 yards. I only regret the abundance of pieces that go with this system, but I see no other way to make it compatible with a wide range of lenses. The resulting difficulty is in setting up and breaking down this many components, but they produce great results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great The product is just great to use, very easy to set up, very easy to understand, and comes in a nice case. I rate it 4 instead of 5 stars because you have to be very careful locking the flash ring onto the rings that go on the camera lens. In some cases it feels like both the top and bottom of the flash ring are attached to the lens ring, but in fact the bottom can be still loose. This makes it possible for the flash ring to detach and fall off the front of the camera. It is not hard to ensure that both top and bottom of the flash ring are attached properly. But it must be tested before assuming so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The necessary macro flash I purchased the R1 wireless flash for taking extreme macro shots, mostly of insects. Because the flash set-up is small (especially without wires and the commander unit) it is easy to bring into the field. Some downsides of using the double flash is that it can cause weird double shadows. One solution is to diffuse the flash. I don't use the diffusers in the kit (which don't alleviate this problem), but I use a sheet of tracing paper hung over the lens. Another option is to aim the flash at a white background and bounce it onto the subject. Overall, it is a useful system, and easy to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a great creative tool for macro! got this for use with my Nikon 200mm micro lens, its great - you really do not need the more expensive controller since my D200 command mode controls the strobes and even lets you individually tweak exposure compensation. very nice, even and soft light for butterflies, flowers. lets you shoot hand-held with high f-stop and fast speed in tight depth of field applications. comes brilliantly packages with a host fo travel accessories too. only complaint is strobes could use a higher guide number, not as strong as a proper speedlight but overall a great system, I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Lighting for Macros Closeups I used this to take cadaver dissection photos for a textbook as well as macros of insects and flower. The kit integrated flawlessly with my 300 S. The system allowed for use of 105 2.8 Macro, an 80-200 2.8, a 24 2.8 and a 50 1.4 lenses with quick switchovers as the dissection quickly progressed. The screw on rims, the easily attached ring with the lateral flashes still provide a solid base. I found the ability to hold the flashes at different heights and angles allowed for a degree of creativity unavailable in a standard ring flash. The images are sharp and well saturated. The only problem I have is that the diffusers did not fit. I have not had time to contact Nikon... regarding this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Dental/Orthodontic photos!!! I'm using a Nikon D90 with 60mm Macro to take intraoral and facial photos for orthodontics. At first, I'd purchased a wireless ring flash from a company who claims to be a dental photography guru. However, most photos came out with dark shadows or with un-matching colors. I'd even attended a course during one of the AAO thinking that perhaps the settings, F stops, etc. were the culprits of my photo problems. Thankfully, the flash broke down after 2 years of average use and ended up purchasing the R1 wireless flash with the rechargeable batteries. It was simply the best dollar per dollar that I'd spent in dental photography!! Nowadays, my photos come out nice, with the right amount of shadows, vivid colors and less focusing issues. Dear Colleagues, this ring flash will deliver!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING PRODUCT Being new to flash photography, I was concerned how easy it will be to use and how I could use it. The R1 system made everything a breeze that's both versatile and fun to use. First off, Nikon provides you will everything to start off with, including a diffuser, stands, ring adapters, and color gels. The wireless flash units were incredibly simple and straight forward and, since its wireless, one can arrange them in almost any position to experiment with the light. New to flash photography? This will help you become pro in no time.
