    Nikon 4794 reviews

SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander Unit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 202.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable Quality I use the Nikon wireless lighting system in 90% of my workflow as a professional photographer for a university . Even though my Nikon 200 has a built-in commander, it still emits a flash to send instructions to the remote flashes which can be hard on subjects eyes. The SU-800 works via infra-red and so this problem is solved. Up to three groups of speedlights may be controlled with the SU-800 manually or automatically. The working distance between the SU-800 and Speedlights is greater than just the camera commander. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use. The SU-800 is smaller than a regular Speedlight, lightweight and I can fit the entire lighting system in a backpack.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Much Better Options for the Money I was really excited about getting this item. As a wedding photographer who has beach weddings I am always looking for ways to reduce my lighting kit size and weight. Going Strobist is one of the best ways. What interested me in this was the ability to control three speed lights from the commander. However, I learned very quickly that unless you have a direct line of sight with no bright sunlight, these items are useless. If you are working inside a studio environment with direct line of sight then these work great. Outside of that, they are extremely unreliable. For the money, there are radio trigger/receivers that are far more reliable and can go through walls out of line of sight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon quality is impressive I had tried another speedlight commander from Vello which only worked for about 30 shots and failed. Thought I could save some money but was disappointed. Had purchased the Nikon R-1 flash system and used the commander mode in camera which worked great. Wanted something I could adjust without camera menus. The Nikon Su-800 works great and I couldn't be more pleased. I mostly use a pair of SB-600's for fill flash when shooting in a bird blind and the Su-800 is just amazing! This commander allows me to control the R-1 flash units as well as the SB-600's for a more complicated table top system as well. Thanks B&H for your quick rma and refund for the Vello.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected. The main reason I got this product was that the signal flashes from the D600's built-in flash was showing up in my photos (particularly in the eyes or eyeglasses) and it didn't look right. With this product, the issue was solved. It's also a lot easier to program the manual power settings than via the camera body's Commander menus. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is that at over $$, it's not cheap. (But it sure beats buying four PocketWizards to handle a 3-light setup in the studio--that would have set me back $800.)Just a warning: the product arrives with the Closeup Mode enabled. You have to switch it off if you're using it in non-closeup situations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad I have used my su800 on location, both outdoors and indoors in all kinds of lighting conditions. Indoors, with not a lot of daylight, this thing performs miracles. My understanding the signal bounces so I have been able to fire off strobes that were to the side and behind me BUT within close range of perhaps up to 10 feet. I did notice that it communicates better when the flash is to the left of it. Outdoors, it works great but the distance necessary between the SU 800 and strobes shortens as the brightness of the day increases. It definitely is a better commander tool then the pop-up flash and the easy to access controls are well worth it. My only wish is the distance issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much Better than Pop-Up Commander! I finally upgraded to this after 3 years of using pop-up flashes and SB800s & 900s as commanders. I wanted greater reliability in daylight conditions and extended range. This does the trick for a better price point than getting into pocket wizards, radio poppers or skyports. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is that there are still situations where line of sight prevents your remotes from firing reliably, but it is so much better than what I was doing before that it doesn't bother me. Also, much of that can be fixed with the SC-29 or a slight change in setup. I use this with 2-3 speedlights and it is great having the dedicated control panel instead of having to use the camera menu system. Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Say goodbye to sync cords. I use this with two SB 800's and a SB 600. The SU 800 helps to eliminate those unwanted shadows caused by using a flash attached to your camera. It's very effective for portraits, or product photography. Since it's wireless you are also free to experiment with different lighting possibilities. I've used it on a few jobs thus far, and I've been pretty happy with my results. The only problem I have with the SU 800 is it uses CR123A batteries. It's not that big of a problem, I just forget to buy extra (CR123A) batteries sometimes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good! Very easy to use with compatible Nikon flash units. Range and line of sight is somewhat limited (though better than I expected after reading some reviews), but most of what I shoot is wide-angle, so I can get close to the particular subject, so range rarely is a problem for how I shoot. Also, most of what I do is small-medium landscapes, where just a punch of fill is needed against an overpowering backlighting. If you want to shoot something from 100ft away in bright sunlight with lots of barriers to line of sight, this may not be what you need. For me and (I imagine) for studio settings, the SU-800 works great. Rarely misfires, and usually due to slow recycle on the flash unit I use (usually SB600s), not because of the SU-800 commander. Though I am fairly new to off-camera flash, so far, I am quite pleased with it.
