Hoping it lasts longer than the first one...

I bought this transformer to replaced an identical one that came with the remote thermostat kit for a Rinnai propane heater. That two year old transformer failed after a neighborhood power failure that involved many failed restart attempts by the power company. It was plugged into an APC uninterruptable backup power supply that was also a surge protector. The outage was so long that the battery on the power supply had died. No other electrical device in my house died during the outage, leading me to think that the transformers are more fragile than they should be.
These power supplies are surprisingly heavy, and will work their way out of a wall outlet if the supplied screw is not used to hold them in place. And both came with ridiculously bright green LEDs that are on all the time (until they fail). They will light up a dark room. I put tape over mine.
The transformers use a glued-together case, but I cut the failed one open and couldn’t see any point of failure. There was no obvious damage to the few components on the small circuit board where the LED is mounted, and the very substantial steel and copper transformer appeared unharmed. Something certainly failed, but not visibly. I didn’t see any sort of fuse.
The price and shipping were reasonable, and I was glad to find an identical replacement. The new one seems to be working fine, and I’m hoping the failure of the original was a fluke, But I give the new one only three stars due to my lack of confidence (and the stupidly bright light).
A simple power supply

This MG Electronics MGT2440 24VAC 40VA Class II Power Supply did exactly what is was supposed to do powering my new ecobee thermostat. I would have been a little happier if I fully understood the hookup as MG does not give you any type of schematic to go with this. Noy a big deal if you've done it before, I was a novice at this.

I'm replacing a transfomer that is 120V, 60Hz, 24 VAC, 40VA and 0.48A, which is about 57.6 watts. This transformer is the same, except it's only 50 watts. Can I safely use this model as a replacement?

depending on what you are using it for a 24vac 40va transformer if that is what the device calls for will work. if the device is calling for more than it is a risk of burning out.

question
110v input what's the dc output?
Asked by: Anonymous
no, 24V AC output, not DC. Do not plug this into something that is expecting DC.

question
To power the WiFi thermostat how do you connect the wires? This adapter has 3 terminals: AC - GND - AC. Which one goes to C and which one to R on the thermostat?
Asked by: Greg
The R and C on the thermostat each go to one of the AC terminals on the MGT2440 transformer. The GND terminal is only for grounding the transformer to your home wiring if you wish to do so. There is no polarity on the 2 AC terminals.
