I'm replacing a transfomer that is 120V, 60Hz, 24 ...
I'm replacing a transfomer that is 120V, 60Hz, 24 VAC, 40VA and 0.48A, which is about 57.6 watts. This transformer is the same, except it's only 50 watts. Can I safely use this model as a replacement?
depending on what you are using it for a 24vac 40va transformer if that is what the device calls for will work. if the device is calling for more than it is a risk of burning out.

To power the WiFi thermostat how do you connect the wires? This adapter has 3 terminals: AC - GND - AC. Which one goes to C and which one to R on the thermostat?
Use both of the AC terminals, one goes to C and the other goes to R.
