Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or 3x4 ft product setup.

Fabrics are color balanced to all Photoflex soft boxes, panels and discs.
Removeable black backing provides an additional lighting technique.

Convertible Umbrella-30" is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just as good as my first one I have owned a Photoflex 30 umbrella for about 2 years now as I learn the ropes of photography. I finally decided to buy a second one to expand my off-camera flash. It's a versitile umbrella, small enough to travel to location but large enough to spread the light. However, unlike my first one the support elements on this one are plastic. The support elements on my first one were all metal. I hope the plastic is just as durable as the metal model which is the only reason I dock a star. The convertible feature is a little bit of a pain to take apart and put back together, but you can't beat the size and simplicity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Economical, effective, and versatile I shoot interiors professionally, and use the 30 Photoflex convertible on all of my monolights. The 30 diameter effectively diffuses the strobe's power and greatly reduces shadows but without losing clarity, as larger diameter umbrellas might. The black cover can be used to turn the umbrella from a shoot through to an interior bounce, useful when harder light is needed (and without light blowing back behind the strobe). The backer cloth can also be used as a quick gobo to partially cover the umbrella, thus reducing hotspots on ceilings, for example. It's easy to deploy and packs up small, fitting nicely into a monolight case. The one drawback I have with the umbrella is the tight fit it has on my Speedotron monolights -- either the diameter of the umbrella is too large or my lights are a bit out of plumb, but getting the Photoflex into and out of my lights takes some muscle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value What I love most is the spokes are string plastic not metal. I've had umbrellas with metal spokes fall over and bend permanently, thus becoming useless. The plastic spokes on the Photoflex are strong and bend and spring back into place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good - Does What it Should So far so good. Seems to be well built and serve the purpose that I bought it for - using a speed light to illuminate small areas. I wish they had a metal grommet on the black cover where it attaches to the center post. It seems to be a weak point that could be prone to tearing. Other than that the rest of the product seems to be of good quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great go anywhere umbrella This umbrella is well made and very portable, great for one person portraits. Slightly pearlized white fabric material produces nice skin tones. The only thing I don't like is the plastic screw-in cap that holds the black fabric in place, it looks a bit weak. If it was made out metal I would give this product five stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect size for strobists / on the go I love that this umbrella is convertible. I bought it to use mainly as a shoot through umbrella to even out my strobe lighting at weddings (when I need to use strobes for family photos) and I love the versatility it offers. It's the perfect size for medium sized groups of families and seems well constructed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Compact Umbrella I love this umbrella. It's very compact and can be used either as a black and white reflecting umbrella or you can take the black backing off and use it as a white shoot through umbrella. It's light weight so probably best not to man-handle too much. Can't beat the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Portable This is a very strong lightweight umbrella. I have had others fold under the strong wind but not this one. Use it on the beach in windy conditions. Very solid. Gives a soft uniform light.
