Manfrotto 808RC4 overview

  • 1Description

The 808RC4 3-Way, Pan-and-Tilt Head from Manfrotto has a load capacity of 17.6 lb and can be attached to tripods or other support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. It includes an integrated RC4 quick release cam lock and a 410PL Quick Release Plate. RC4 compatible quick release plates such as the 410PL can removed from the head by pulling the cam lock's spring-loaded lever, which also allows the plate to be instantly reattached.

Cameras or accessories that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 or 3/16"-20 mount can be connected to the 410PL Quick Release Plate, which measures 2.5 x 3.3 x 0.5" and has a rubberized, non-slip surface. The head can be rotated 360°, tilted 90° forwards or 30° backwards, as well as 90° sideways for portrait orientation. Each of these three movements function independently of each other, have dedicated control handles, and can be locked into place by twisting each corresponding handle's rubberized grip.

To promote fast, repeatable, and accurate device positioning, the 808RC4 3-Way, Pan-and-Tilt Head also includes dedicated angle scales for each movement that are designed for easy visibility. For heavier loads, built-in counterbalance springs can be user-activated to help ensure smooth as well as gradual backwards, forwards, and portrait orientation tilt movements.

    Manfrotto 808RC4 reviews

    808RC4 3-Way, Pan-and-Tilt Head with 410PL Quick Release Plate is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 165.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable and easy to use Easy to use, and it stays in place. The plate comes off easily with one hand and it doesn't wobble or loosen mysteriously when in use. The handles are a little smooth to feel like you're getting a good grip, but they tighten easily and stay that way until you say otherwise. The range of motion is pretty good but if you're real low to the ground shooting horizontally, there is a limit to it's range, but it mostly depends on the angle of your tripod!Overall I'm very happy with this head and will probably be purchasing a second soon for the other tripod to replace the ball head. I will never use a ball head again, this is definitely the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 808RC4 Pan/Tilt Head with RC4 plate This is new, so rating based on first impressions only. This head sits in between my old 3030 and the 3039/229, but its weight to capacity ratio is an improvement (3 lb. head sipports 17.5 lb. camera). Construction seems solid (typical Manfrotto), movements are smooth, and now sprung. Should work fine for MF, light LF and video. Looking at several pan/tilt heads the 808RC4 hit the sweet spot of weight, capacity and price. For the times I want the seperated movements of a pan/tilt instead of a ball head, this should work. Plus for $42 you can add an RC4 adapter to older heads (inclu. ball heads) to move your camera from one support to another easily.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Survivor! Outdoors, indoor portaiture. I have taken my first one everywhere from swamps, ocean islands, mountains and deserts for the last 4 years. I have beaten it up dropping it biking on rugged trails, hiking along rocky cliffs banging into things, throwing it into airport luggage, and having it bathed in fresh and salf water. It finally died when I tried to fix the caroded pin that locks open the quick release mechanism. If there is a fault, I can't remove the pin to clean it. It also weighs a lot and I get tired lugging it through brush and mountain trails. It doesn't do anything special, and it is slow to set up, but it just works and it is a survivor! For $, best simple tripod head out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stable and Smooth! I love this Manfrotto 3-way Pan/Tilt Head for my tripod. It is very easy for me to work. Its RC4 Quick Release snaps my camera--or heavy lens--in place quickly and easily and securely, and I have no worries that my camera or lens might fall. I wanted a tripod head that would give me confidence for my camera equipment, and I found it! This head is a little heavier than the one I previously had, but it's so much stabler that I really don't mind the bit of extra weight. I have no problem recommending this item to others--it's easy to operate, and a great addition to my gear!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safety first. I use this aluminum 808RC4 to be the base for my Toyo-Field 45AII - a 4x5 camera which weighs in at around six pounds, but when a newer style (bulkier) Symmar or similar lens is added, plus lens shade/compendium, filter, BTZS dark cloth and film holder, the dead weight is closer to ten pounds or more. I was using a very good 'famous name' ball head (which is great for my MF cameras), but I quickly tired of the lack of control when aligning the camera - the 'floppyness' of a large format camera sitting on a ball, always about to suddenly dip forward alarmingly. I was always wishing for three hands ! The Manfrotto 808RC4 is such a pleasure to use, especially with the super safe RC4 quick release plate. The 3-way head (with dual axis built in levels) can quickly and accurately bring your camera into perfect alignment. The three large rubberized adjustment handles are perfectly placed and excellent to use, and when the camera position is locked, it is locked. Not a millimeter of movement as you tighten the handles, or when you remove your hold of the body. All of this, plus two balance springs in the vertical tilt (forward/backward) and horizontal tilt (left/right) movements (which you can turn on or off) to make the alignment of the camera even easier. I like products that are well designed and well engineered. I especially like products which I can 'forget' about when I use them. I want to concentrate on my creative work, not my tools. The Manfrotto 808RC4 is such a tool, and I am delighted with it. If you need to support a weighty camera, with ease and with absolute peace of mind, the 808RC4 should be your go-to tripod head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best tripod Head I've owned This head is super versatile and super sturdy. I can get my camera at just about every angle and not worry about the tripod leaning or falling over. I really like the handles used for adjustment and the level bubbles. This head is very quick to adjust and can hold the weight of my camera easily. The only complaint I have is that its sometimes difficult to attach the release plate to the head, but I'm sure that will get easier with practice. It locks in nice and tight though once you get it. I don't worry anymore about my camera not being safe and secure. Very trustworthy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Effective Very effective. I was initially skeptical of the spring tension system, but I have found it to be very useful. The head is very sturdy, I actually was in a situation where I had a time critical shot amd was switching from wide-angle to telephoto and couldn't afford to take the plate off the camera and put it on the tripod collar, so I just attacked a 70-200 f/2.8L to a 1D (mkIII) and it held, no problem. It also is very stable even with the 1D in vertical, and the Spring system makes the motion smooth and gentle on the Camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid + reliable + well made 3-way head Used as a base for digital cameras (Nikon D300 and D700) for studio and landscape work. Very solid + reliable, and easy to adjust. Not particularly small so not well suited to field work requiring a lot of carrying given the overall size / weight, but extremely reliable and does an excellent job providing a firm base for long exposure landscape shots. Also works very well as a base for panoramic shots either alone (using the built in bubble levels) or with a panoramic accessory like a Nodal Ninja. Not as flexible for rapid-action sports shots requiring rapid movement along 3-axis, but still recommended for everything else.
