question
Hello,I am new to tripods and I was advised to buy the Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod along with this particular head. Is that a good/compatible combination?I was also advised to buy additional quick release plates. I will need one each for a Canon EOS 1DX, a Canon 7D and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens. Please could you give me the information on the appropriate/compatible quick release plates? Thank you.
Yes. The 055CXPRO4 tripod would work well in combination with the 808RC4 head. For additional plates, I would recommend getting these:Manfrotto 410PL Quick Release Plate - for RC4 Quick Release SystemB&H # MA410PL ? Mfr # 410PLThese will work underneath your two cameras, as well us under the foot of your 100-400mm.

question
I saw the 808RC4 here is provided with a 3271 QR plate. Is there any difference between it and the 410PL? Do I have to buy the 410PL? Thanks
The 3271 plate is the same as the 410pl (both are referred to as RC4 type) plate. Thank you for pointing this out, I will have our webteam update this site to reflect the proper plate number.

re: answer to counterbalance springs in Manfrotto 808RC4 - question was not answered. How do I "simply turn the springs off" and on?
On the 808RC4, there is a little knob beneath the quick release clamp (you can see it in the second picture) that you simply have to turn.

question
Does the 808RC4 have retractable handles like the X-Pro 3-way? That feature would make it much easier to fit in a tripod bag.
No, the handles do not retract...but they can be removed (unscrewed out).
