Savage 27 Thunder Gray Overview

Photograph people and products against a smooth, uncluttered background with this 107" x 150' roll of #27 Thunder Gray Seamless Background Paper from Savage. To facilitate even lighting, the surface of the paper is non-reflective and has a fine-tooth finish. In addition to photography, the paper may be used for events, decorations, banners, and more.

The paper density is 145 gsm and it has an easy-to-handle resilient thickness. For mounting on many standard background stands, it comes wound on a core with a 2.125" interior diameter. A plastic sleeve protects the roll in transit and can be saved to provide continued protection when the paper is not in use. The paper should be stored vertically to reduce the possibility of warping and other damage. Photographers often use clamps to secure the paper to a backdrop stand as well as tape to secure the paper to the floor if rolled out for full-body shots. The paper is lignin- and acid-free, pH neutral, and 100% recyclable.
Finding a Neutral Gray
Savage has a wide selection of color options, including plenty of different grays. If you are looking for a neutral gray, the recommended options would be #09 Stone Gray or the slightly darker #27 Thunder Gray. For a gray that is closest to an 18% gray card your best bet is #74 Smoke Gray.
Choosing the Right Width
When purchasing a roll of background paper, you will need to determine the best size for your subject and space. Most colors are available in a range of widths and lengths though staples, like black and white, are available in even more options. Here is a general guide to choosing the right size:
 • 26" - This compact size can be used for smaller subjects, such as tabletop product photography or portraits of children. It can also be used for tight headshots with careful framing.
 • 53" - A medium size, this is suitable for up to full-length portraits of a single individual and larger objects.
 • 86" - Create images with multiple people (up to three) or very large objects.
 • 107" - The largest option for many colors, this width is great for group portraits or families with room for around four people or very large objects.
 • 140" - Available for #01 Super White, #20 Black, #46 Tech Green, and #70 Storm Gray, the largest size can fit up to six people at a time for larger group photos and can be used with very large objects.
Depending on your own space and capabilities, you should consider your paper size carefully. Wider and longer rolls are heavier and can be more difficult to work with though they bring advantages to ensuring a filled background.

I used this for a halloween pet photoshoot throughout October. The dark gray is nice because, with lighting angles, you are able to darken it/lighten the background for a desired contrast against your subject.

The paper is the perfect color and (almost) the perfect fit for my use. Of course, it's hard to judge the size of something without actually seeing it. I'm using this paper for commercial audition purposes. There are a few negatives that I've experienced with it, but I think they're easy enough to overlook. 1. Shipping cost almost as much as the paper. For something that arrived damaged, this is a bit of a bummer. It was still less than ordering from Amazon (would've been $99) but still, I expected better care to be taken on the item before it arrived. More on that: 2. The roll of paper arrived damaged. The end of the tube was missing its cap. It did still have the staples protruding through, but only one side had a plastic cap. I'm actually surprised it made it at all without falling out. There was a bit of tearing on that end. 3. The staples scraped up the paper as I removed it from the tube. It was annoying, but I have 8' ceilings and 18' of paper. It's not a major dealbreaker. Plus that, it is paper. I'm not expecting it to last forever without getting a little tattered. 4. It's not wide enough, but any bigger and my backdrop stand won't fit in my room. This isn't a fault on anyone but myself. I didn't fully comprehend the backdrop, my placement, the placement of the camera and the lenses that I'm using. What I've done to compensate for this is to slide it over to the side that I'm entering, and making sure that I stay center-frame (not touching the edge), and then it's just a few touchups from there. Essentially for 3/4 shots it's not the most idea, but it's workable. For medium shots and closer, it will work fine. Alternatively, I could cut the paper and tape it up. I didn't reach out to B&H or the company to try to rectify the damaged item. It didn't seem worth it to do so, honestly. This will still work for what I need it. It was my intention to buy something used if I could anyway because I'm trying to be environmentally conscious.

question

My 54 seamless background paper is curling along the left and right edges. What causes this?
Asked by: Donald
If you are referring to the corners of the background that is unrolled, that is normal. What most do is tape or use clamps to prevent it from doing that.If it a large part of the background it sounds like it could be humidity that is causing that. But to know for sure that is difficult to pin point. If you just received the background you should discuss this with customer service,Customer Service, you can email them at ord-status@bhphotovideo.com, or call them after 9am EST at: 800.221.5743 or 212.239.7765Fax: 212.502.9426 or 866.521.7375Or you can come in to chat.

I am looking for 50% Gray. What color would be close to that?
Asked by: David
According to Savage Universal, while they have several gray tones that are very near neutral gray, none are exactly 50% gray (or 18% reflectance) and should not be used in place of neutral gray cards for white balance purposes. Also, do note that the way you light the background and your exposure settings can also affect the color gray perceived by your camera, and as seamless paper is a natural fiber product and is dyed in large batches, the color can vary ever so slightly from batch to batch. With all that in mind, their #74 Smoke Gray seamless background appears to be the closest to neutral, while the #70 Storm Gray seamless background would be the next closest, though it would be slightly warmer in comparison to Smoke Gray.

question

Which is a better all around grey backdrop color, Thunder or Fashion?
Asked by: Gretchen
Thunder Gray is one of the darker gray backgrounds. It is very good but for some too dark.#56 Fashion Gray is somewhat in the middle and that one does seem to be more popular. And the one that comes close to 18% gray is #70 Storm Gray.

What is a good size for a portrait photographer with a small studio?
Asked by: Gitty
Hi Gitty! The size you want to get will depend on how you intend to use it! If you are only doing headshots, 3/4 body shots or photographing children the 53" width would be perfect. However if you want to do any full body or group portraits, we recommend the 86" width. This is our midsize width that allows you to shoot full body portraits without compromising space as you may have to with the 107" width.
