Savage 20 Black Overview

Photograph people and products against a smooth, uncluttered background with this 107" x 150' roll of #20 Black Seamless Background Paper from Savage. To facilitate even lighting, the surface of the paper is nonreflective and has a fine-tooth finish. In addition to photography, the paper may be used for events, decorations, banners, and more.

The paper density is 145 gsm and it has an easy-to-handle resilient thickness. For mounting on many standard background stands, it comes wound on a core with a 2.125" interior diameter. A plastic sleeve protects the roll in transit and can be saved to provide continued protection when the paper is not in use. The paper should be stored vertically to reduce the possibility of warping and other damage. Photographers often use clamps to secure the paper to a backdrop stand as well as tape to secure the paper to the floor if rolled out for full-body shots. The paper is lignin- and acid-free, pH neutral, and 100% recyclable.
Choosing the Right Width
When purchasing a roll of background paper, you will need to determine the best size for your subject and space. Most colors are available in a range of widths and lengths though staples, like black and white, are available in even more options. Here is a general guide for choosing the right size:
  • 26" - This compact size can be used for smaller subjects, such as tabletop product photography or portraits of children. It can also be used for tight headshots with careful framing.
  • 53" - A medium size, this is suitable for up to full-length portraits of a single individual and larger objects.
  • 86" - Create images with multiple people (up to three) or very large objects.
  • 107" - The largest option for many colors, this width is great for group portraits or families with room for around four people or very large objects.
  • 140" - Available for #01 Super White, #20 Black, #46 Tech Green, and #70 Storm Gray, the largest size can fit up to six people at a time for larger group photos and can be used with very large objects.

Depending on your own space and capabilities, you should consider your paper size carefully. Wider and longer rolls are heavier and can be more difficult to work with though they bring advantages to ensuring a filled background.

question

I have a section of an unfinished basement to practice photography and thought of getting some seamless paper. To both fit and give me the most options for my space, the 86 would work best. However, I see there are only four color options in that size (I only need black and white, so no issue there). However, is there any risk of this size eventually not being available in case I want to turn my basement into a studio for the long term? i.e. do you think an 86 option will be available for many years to come?
Asked by: Ricky
From our understanding, the 86 wide paper by Savage is a newer option and we have not heard of any plans they have of stopping production on this size.

I used ProMaster seamless paper in the past and was annoyed with how it didn't absorb (or reflect respectively) the lights and instead had annoying shiny spots and uneven background colors so I switched to muslin. Muslin has its own problems (I have no space to properly keep wrinkle free) so I'd like to try paper again. How well does this brand absorb the light? Or should I stick with fabric?
Asked by: Timothy
I think you will have the same experience with this seamless that you did with ProMaster. I have found the only way to avoid the Uneven background when using seamless paper is to shoot with the subject pretty far away from the background.

question

Whats the difference between pure white and super white Savage papers? I am looking for the right paper for shooting portraits with white seamless background
Asked by: Gregory
Savage Universal offers 3 different white seamless colors including White, Pure White, and Super White. The white color is the warmest tone of the 3 while pure white and super white are a completely neutral tone with the difference being the super white has UV brighteners added and slightly more fine texture.Pure white is the best all-around white, neutral tone, and it works great for anything from headshots and portraits to product shots and works great with or without backlights. Super white has UV brighteners added to the paper to make it appear brighter (think of using blueing agent when washing clothes to make your white clothes look brighter). The paper has a higher basis weight compared to all other seamless paper options, so the paper is stiffer and slightly thicker. It is perfect for product shots and full-length shots, and comes in a wider 140 roll option. It is best for achieving absolute white when using backlights. However, in some circumstances without using backlights and when there is more distance between the model and the backdrop, Super White paper may appear to have a bluish cast.Personally, I think Pure White is more flexible as it keeps its neutral tone with or without the use of backlights. However, if you are using the paper specifically for a clean white background and you always use lights on the background to increase its exposure for a catalog-type look (and you have no plans to underexpose the background for a gray or black background, or for use with gels to change the background color, and will mainly ONLY use it for high-key white backgrounds), then Super White would be better suited for your usage needs.

question

If I want to buy seamless paper background what is extra charges for shipping?
Asked by: Ishit G.
You may calculate your actual shipping options/order totals by adding the items you want to a shopping cart. It will then list the shipping options, descriptions, ETA's and fees to your location.
