question
do you need a router or does this hook directly to your modem?
This is not a router. Just a simple switch. As in, it by itself will not. Automatically assign dhcp IP addresses. If either your modem is a router(likely) or you know how to manually set t up TCPIC settings in each of your devices, it will be fine. These little netgear's are quite robust. All made of metal.
