Pelican 1780 Reviews

Solid, capable case

Overall solid build. There are aspects that are a pain or that could be improved, but overall it would be difficult to expect much more from a case that isn’t full custom. The case breaks out into two detachable halves, which is great, but I wish the case was optionally able to stay latched on one side and open like a suitcase when the need requires. The pick-and-pluck foam is well engineered in general, and while it isn’t perfect it would be difficult to expect more from it. Strongly suggest future consumers to consider getting shoe glue for tweaks and repairs, as well as plasti dip spray for increased robustness (there are many YouTube. videos on this). 4x large layers of 3” foam can take a significant amount of time to plan cuts and make them (you have to think in three dimensions); suggest consumers use toothpicks to mark cuts as suggested, and consider using a butter knife or a slightly sharp chisel to help pull away pieces from each other and make cuts. I think it would be very helpful if Pelican included a purpose-built tool to help with the pick-and-pluck foam. A couple of gripes about the foam - the pre-cut grid was not symmetrical on the foam I received. The first column was cut about 1.5x the width of the rest of them, meaning when layering two foam layers you have to make sure they’re the right orientation for holes to match. I could imagine this could cause people to have to redo their foam cuts and buy a new foam set entirely ($300) if they didn’t catch this as I did. Second, the foam seems to be about .5”-1” smaller than the case interior, which esp. when coupled with the slight taper of the interior results in the foam bunching up along longer, thinner stretches; see photos. I resolved by gluing to the bottom layer and spraying w/ plasti dip. Suggestion to manufacturer - would encourage adding an option to keep contents from falling out when splitting case open. I used tiny screw eyes with paracord, but surely a better solution is out there.

Solid case, but heavy. Everything came in working order and shipped fast. Good Price too. I use it to hold my 10' x 20' canopy.

re: the interior dimension (42 x 22 x 15.1) ... 22" is case interior width? or depth?
Asked by: Dan
The 22" dimension would be the wide from front to back of a open case if the length of the 42" was going side to side. 15" is the depth counting both halves of the case.
