Westcott 2011 Overview

This Westcott 43" White Satin Umbrella has a removable black backing, so that it may be used as a "shoot-through", makeshift softbox. It has a collapsible shaft, which makes it very compact for packing away in your location case.

Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush. This umbrella's suggested use is for 1 or 2 person mid-length portraits.

This umbrella has an 8 mm standard shaft which will fit virtually all heads except Elinchrom which requires a 7 mm shaft. Elinchrom owners should mount this umbrella to their head's tilter, rather than the umbrella receptacle.

Awful fabric, difficult to wrap back up

Light-wise, it's as functional as any other umbrella. The 14.5 collapsed length is spectacular, and makes for excellent portability. Unfortunately, the build quality is poor and particularly the white fabric is awful and rough/crinkly, making it difficult to wrap it back up into its very slim fitting cover if you use the removable black backing, which also will have its pins constantly popping off when you collapse the umbrella. If you want that convertibility, unfortunately AFAIK this is the only compact option available. But for a plain white bounce or shoot through, I'm happier with my Phottix Double-Folding white umbrella, which has better fabric and a heavier-duty (but larger) scabbard-type cover.

cheap construction

The biggest problem with these umbrellas is the black cover coming off every time you collapse them. That and the really flimsy cheap construction. I've also had the ribs break from normal use. I'm not the least bit rough on my gear. I expect it to last at least a little while.

question

I can't fold up the umbrella, with the black cover on, without the black cover's metal tips falling off of the umbrella's ribs' tips. How does one keep the metal tips of the black cover on the umbrella's ribs' tips when folding the umbrella?

It6 sounds like the cap may be strip. I would contact B&H for a replacement. I haven't had that problem with these

question

Can't figure out how to remove the black outer layer. The place where it attaches at the center. Maybe I'm missing something?
Asked by: Jerry
Hi Jerry, I had the same problem but I figured it out. Just unscrew the round small metal cap at the top of the umbrella and release the small metal tips at the ends of the ribs. I hope this helpsRegardsLouis
