Earthworks PM40 Overview

The PM40 PianoMic System from Earthworks uses an unconventional approach to capturing piano with superior results while keeping the microphones hidden from view. Two high-quality, random-incidence omnidirectional microphones are mounted onto a telescoping bar for close-miking within the piano itself.

The microphone capsules may be mounted to either face, or point away from the dampers. The capsules themselves feature flex-arm goosenecks that enable further microphone adjustments to be made in order to achieve desired audio results. The PianoMic connects to the 5-pin input of the electronics-box, which in turn features dual 3-pin XLR outputs for connecting to a stereo preamplifier, two mixer channel inputs, etc.

While many experienced engineers may find the close-miking technique unconventional, special technology ensures optimum results and placement inside the piano means less leakage from nearby instruments, speaker cabinets and other noise sources.

Internally Mounted Microphones
The PM40 PianoMic system mounts within the piano bed itself for maximum results and minimal visibility.
Random Incidence Omnidirectional Microphones
Superior quality, random-incidence omnidirectional capsule compensate for transients and other issues involved with close-miking pianos. The result is low-noise and an excellent quality suitable for crucial recording and professional sound reinforcement applications.
Flexible Adjustments
The telescoping bar adjusts to fit any size piano and the capsules are set onto flex-arm gooseneck for perfect microphone placement.
Electronic Output Stage Box
A separate output stage box features a 5-pin XLR input and two 3-pin XLR outputs. A leather case with a strap allows the box to be mounted onto a piano leg.

Incredible sounding piano mic system

I'm using this microphone in a live-audio situation in a house of worship and it's a HUGE step in sound quality from the dual mic setup we were using before. It's incredibly clear and accurate and has our baby grand sounding better than it ever has before. Also, it's a very low profile installation and allowed us to remove two mic stands from the stage. The placement is maintained week to week so it takes less work from our sound volunteers. The one downside is the first PM40 we got had some popping/crackling that would occur only after the mic had been turned on for 20-30 minutes and then someone would approach the stage. We replaced it with another PM40 and it's a lot better but every once in a while it still happens. We're dealing with it since the improved sound is worth the headache.

Best Piano Mic!

The mic is easy to install and use. It actually makes the sound in our system seem like it is coming from the piano. You can hardly tell a mic is used. It give the most natural piano sound from any mic I have ever used or seen. Definitely worth the $.

What does the output stage box connect to in order to record? Can the PM40 be connected directly to a computer or iPad Pro?
Asked by: Robert
The Earthworks PM40 PianoMic Piano Condenser Microphone System has a single stereo 5-pin XLR connector which connects to the input on the included electronics box and feeds to a pair of standard 3-pin XLR output connectors. The electronics box functions as a Y-cable that splits the audio to enable connection to two separate XLR inputs on a variety of devices such as a mixer, amplifier, recorder, camera, or USB audio interface. In order to power the mics, each of the inputs will need to supply 48V of phantom power or you can use standalone phantom power supplies instead. To connect the PM40 PianoMic to a computer, you can use a two-channel USB audio interface such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface (B&H # FOSCARL2I23G) or the MOTU M2 Desktop 2x2 USB Type-C Audio-MIDI Interface (B&H # MAM2). The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 can be used with an iPad Pro running iPadOS, and the MOTU M2 can be used with an iPad running iOS 9 or later. For a more compact mobile interface that can operate with battery power, you can use the IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo I/O 2-Channel Audio/MIDI Interface for Mobile Devices and Computers (B&H # IKIRIGPRODUO).
