The 52mm #25 Red Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and creates separation between the tones. Using this filter it creates dramatic skies or simulate a moonlit scene during the day by slightly underexposing the image and also eliminating fog and haze. Infrared film is enhanced with extreme contrast turning skies even more dramatic and turning foliage white in landscape photos. The filter has a filter factor of 8, so you must increase your exposure by 3 stops to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

    #25 Red Filter (52mm) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control Prior to purchasing this Tiffen filter I had read reviews of people complaining that the filter they received had bubbles in it, that the pieces of glass were delaminating or poorly bonded. I ordered it all the same and sure enough i have two areas where the layers of glass are not perfectly bonded. They appear like bubbles and stretch about 5 or 6mm into the filter. In my case this won't matter as I'm using this on a Yashica TLR with an adapter and only need about 30mm of the center of the filter which is clean. I won't bother returning it, but I certainly will think twice before buying other Tiffen filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter for the price I bought this filter for my Canon 50mm f1.8 which I use on an old Canon EOS 650 camera. I normally shoot Kodak Tri-x for both street and landscapes and I wanted a red filter to darken the sky and bring up the over all contrast of the image. I certainly wasn't disappointed. I shot a roll (images with and without the filter) and developed it at home. I loved all of the images that had the filter on them. Needless to say, I'll be using this more often and am very satisfied with my purchase. It includes a nice little case and a 10 year warranty as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from red filter I use the red filter in black and white photography. I am a beginning photographer and have not gotten back the results of my first experiments with it. But I expect decent results for a novice. I read about the filter and it seemed just the thing for me as I am into photographing old barns and other old wooden structures whose exteriors are dark, aged wood. I expect the red #25 filter to perform well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product but came with defect This filter has a great feel to it. The ring is made of metal not some cheap plastic, so it seems like it was built to last. Its a good product but the one that I received came with an air bubble, straight out of the box. Looks like it was caused by a fingerprint in between the glass and film.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it This filter is commonly used for taking black and white pictures. Me as a student Im learning how to take better pictures, this filter gives a better contrast for my pictures, enriching them and obtaining the result that I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drama in the skies. This filter, for B&W film photography, will increase contrast between cloud and sky. The effect is dramatic in landscape photos. I've used Tiffen filters for years. Quality is top notch, price is reasonable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Excellent filter for b&w photography to enhance contrasts (e.g., bright clouds in a dark sky), very high quality with a metal frame (no plastic!), thin enough for wide angle lenses. Love it!
