Allen & Heath ZED-24 Small-Format 24-Channel Analog Mixer with USB Connection
Key Features
  • 16 Mono and 4 Stereo Channels
  • 16 x XLR Mic Inputs with Phantom Power
  • 16 x 1/4" Line Inputs
  • 2- or 3-Band EQ per Channel
The Allen & Heath ZED-24 is a small-format, 24-channel analog mixer offering versatile I/O and a user-friendly workflow for use in home and project studio recording, houses of worship, and live sound reinforcement. The 16 mono channels feature Neutrik XLR mic and 1/4" line inputs, DuoPre preamps with phantom power and bountiful gain, 1/4" insert points, and 3-band EQ, while the four stereo channels have 1/4" inputs and 2-band EQ. All channels are equipped with long-throw 100mm faders, solo and mute buttons, and independent aux send knobs.

The four aux sends are ideal for routing to floor monitors and outboard time-based effects. A USB 1.1 port delivers 2-channel send and return capabilities via a Mac or Windows computer. There are stereo and mono main outputs in addition to alt and headphone outputs, and dual 12-segment LED meters that clearly indicate your master output level. Patch additional stereo sources into the RCA stereo return and 2-track inputs, then route them to the stereo bus, or mix them into the stereo channels. The stereo RCA output is handy for recording your mix to an external device such as a cassette deck or computer soundcard.

This is for our school. Is this a powered mixer or will I need to purchase power amps to drive stage monitors and PA speakers?
Asked by: kevin
The Allen & Heath ZED-24 is a mixer only. You would need to connect it to an amplifier if you want to power passive speakers and/or passive stage monitors. It seems like you are looking for something more like B&H # YAEMX5014C or B&H # YAEMX7.

How can we use 4 speakers from the L&R main outs for our school auditorium? We currently use two powered PA speakers with the mixer, but we need two more PA speakers.
Asked by: kevin
Your two existing speakers will most likely have a line output or "thru" connection on the back that will allow you to connect the output from one speaker to the input on an additional powered speaker. So you can easily expand your existing setup by daisy-chaining more speakers on the left and right sides. As long as you are connecting powered speakers, you can daisy chain as many speakers as desired.

question

Does this mixer provide a multi-track USB output, or is the USB output just a stereo mixdown?

question

is this outboard gear compatible with protools?
Asked by: Emmanuel P.
The mixer has a USB input/output interface. Assuming that your PC is running Pro Tools and that this program accepts input via the USB port on your computer, then it should be compatible. Also, the mixer comes with a free download of Cakewalk's Sonar LE, which performs a similar function. I would recommend that you test Pro Tools to make sure it can use the USB interface first.
