Happy They're Still Made

I needed a dedicated camera plate for two cameras. I bought my Manfrotto tripod head 20 years ago. Nice that folks have appreciated their products so that Manfrotto hasn't discontinued production of this particular product.

I could not find my quick release plate and was happy that B&H had one. Their normal quick shipping got it to me in time for the next photo shoot.

The Manfrotto system is a genius patented technology

The 410PL is the precise same plate (it's part of the RC4 quick-release system) you get when you order the Manfrotto 405 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head (or the 410 geared head). Anyone who needs another plate for their 405 or 410 already knows how cool this technology is. It's not perfect out of the box, but nonetheless deserved five stars. The first thing I do when I receive a new 410PL plate is apply a small dab of heavy-body silicone grease on the dovetail. Why? Because the RC4 system tends to act like what machinists call a "Morse taper"; once the lever/latch slaps into place, it can sometimes take a LOT of force on the lever to get it to break free. Upon receipt, you insert and release the plate a dozen times onto your Manfrotto head and then apply the grease where you see the paint scuffs on the dovetail.

I bought this for use with my Manfrotto 410 geared head. Massive and solid, and definitely for a little DSLR.

I love how sturdy these are but they require a coin / screw driver to undo.

Adaptable mounting plate

I love this quick release plate and base plates. I have also drilled, tapped and screwed them to Novoflex rails for quick release for far more solid connection, with either two or four tapped countersunk bolts. Have installed the plates in a direction that I can swap the two rails. One rail is the brilliant Castel XL - Heavy Duty top and bottom slide which very unfortunately is not available anymore. So then I can achieve 360mm movement east west if needed instead of 360mm north south in an instant. Surprising handy. Then mounted on a Manfrotto 400 head and MK161 tripod, also have a 410 head and old 190 carbon fibre tripod for a tripod on a diet. I have also used these plates to mount three tyre air compressors in my 4WD for ease of maintenance. Many uses for these plate if you are happy to drill more holes in them. Use tapping cutting fluid and tapping, taper, intermediate and bottom tap as needed, and cross hole countersink.

question

Hi, what is the purpose of the two threaded holes on the edges of the plate? Do they match to a specific Manfrotto accessory?
Asked by: Anonymous
The extra holes are 1/4 and 3/8 inch threads. These are used if you need to not use the quick release on the tripod head. You can screw the camera on to a tripod or accessory that has a 1/4 or 3/8 inch thread without taking the plate off.

question

I dislike a mounting screw on the quick release plate which requires a coin to tighten. What is an appropriate D-ring screw for this quick release plate?
Asked by: Ian
yes, I feel the same. this is quite limited in the slot the 1/4-20 goes in, but there is a 1/2 long SS thread with a key ring. Don't know where I got them, but I can send one to you n/c or to B&H n/c. They have always been good to me so no problem. Charlie

question

Does the quick release plate fit on a Manfrotto 410 JUNIOR geared head from 1997?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. The Junior Geared Head replaced part #3275. I purchased this plate for a 410 which also has #3275 written below and it works perfectly. The plate system doesn't look like anything changed with the Junior Geared Head, so you should be fine.
