Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity overview

  • 1Description

The 710 Twin-Finity from Universal Audio is a single channel, dual path microphone preamplifier that includes an instrument direct inject (DI) input. The dual path design combines the "warmth" of a high-voltage vacuum tube design with the clarity of a solid-state circuit. A blend control allows the dialing-in of either circuit or a combination of both in varying degrees.

The tube circuit utilizes a 310V single ended, Class-A triode tube stage, which is phased aligned with a solid-state gain stage. Both stages are fed from a variable gain solid-state transimpedance input amplifier, and are summed to a single output according to the setting of the blend knob. Along with the variable input and output controls, this design allows for an almost infinite range of tones to be dialed-in.

The discrete JFET DI input circuit can handle virtually any electric instrument, including guitars and basses with both active and passive pickups. The VU meter can switch between displaying standard output levels and a "Drive" mode that allows for seeing how hard the input stage is being driven. Phantom power, low pass filter and a polarity flip switch add full functionality to a versatile preamplifier.

High voltage Class-A tube circuit paired with phase-aligned solid-state path
Dual gain stages and blend control provide either "wire with gain" or tube based "creamy to crunchy" sonics with any combination in between
Discrete JFET direct inject input with ultra high 2.2MΩ impedance
Hi-Z input automatically switches from microphone/line via "Jack Detect" feature when a guitar or bass are plugged-in
Backlit output and "Drive" VU metering
Portable, rack-mountable design for studio, desktop or stage

    Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity reviews

    710 Twin-Finity - Microphone/Line Preamplifier is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Preamp! I spent much time reading reviews on mic preamps and came upon UA products before buying one. I considered quite a few units. While many people raved about the 610, I decided to try their 710. I think the price point is very good in comparison to other preamps. I liked the concept of blending a tube circuit into the signal. Upon received the preamp I was immediately impressed with it and never looked back. This is one very nice preamp. Very quiet yet allows me to adjust and blend the tone the way I want. I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a quality microphone preamp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clarity, Warmth, and In-between I bought it mainly for my mic chain, and it works great especially for the vocal. With the tone blending feature you can always pick up the best tone you would like to have. The difference is not quite obvious, but it did make the sound characteristic much better matching the project you are working on.With this pre-amp I also get better precense and clean sound comparing with the other pre-amps I have especially when changing the characteristics with the blend knob. The bundled JJ Tesla 12AX7 tube is with a little bit more bass than I would expected. Replacing it with a Mullard BOA or remodeled I get better sound balance and detail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of gear I bought this gear to augment my Shure SM7B. It has done a great job of rounding out what is already a great vocal mic. The advantage of simply dialing in tube-no tube timbre ranges for the 710 is without question why I chose this unit over the 610, Keep in mind these choices are subtle, but very real in affect. My only regret is that I would like to have two. I may sell this unit after a bit and upgrade to the 4 channel version. Although really I only see a need for two channels, I wish there was a two channel version. I do think the build quality could be better. For $, you would expect some nice knobs to touch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Lovely There are a lot of preamps to choose from but this ranks at the top. Simply stated ... it is just lovely. The tube/transistor transition is smooth, the noise is far below expectations and it is clean ... just clean. It is the center of my mic chain.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overpriced 3 knob meter I bought one used for my 1st album out of a recommendation from a sales rep. There's 1 tube in this unit and very little difference between the solid state and tube. You can barely notice it. I sold it afterwards. So for my second album, I bought one brand new because I just heard too many good things about it. I tested it against the pre's in my Focusrite Forte and the Forte was cleaner and warmer. I sent the new unit back. For this price, make sure you test other pre's against it. You'll find better results at half the price and size. This unit should be half the price but it has an UA stamp on it which is what you're paying for. If you have nothing else, this is a good unit but way overpriced. Don't buy the name or the hype that goes along with it. Trust your ears.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from so much money for this ? even at mid levels..and with diff mics and cables we got more than avg noise...hissing.... perhaps a faulty unit...maybe and....very LITTLE diff fiddling with knob between trans and tube... even with headphones and recording and playing back the results... maybe we go test another unit in another store ?
