The Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack is used to greatly increase the number of flash firings of the SB-900, SB-910 and SB-5000 Speedlights, and also shortens the recycling time. It has a total capacity to hold 8 AA batteries, but can also be used with just 4 batteries. It can be used with any type AA battery, but provides the fastest recycling time when used with 4 quality AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.
Total minimum flash recycling time can be as fast as 1.0 seconds when used with AA Ni-MH batteries, and the capacity per round of batteries is about doubled. Batteries must be in place in the flash in order to operate.

SD-9 Battery Pack is a Great AdditionI am a wedding photographer and need fast cycle times and extended shooting times. Adding the SD-9 has reduced cycle times and eliminated my need to change batteries in my SB-900. The fabric case attaches nicely to my belt. The thermal protection on the SB-900 engages to quickly. Using the SD-9 extends the shooting time before the thermal protection engages. After four weddings using the SD-9 I have decided it is safe to turn off the thermal protection when using the SD-9. There is still an audible alarm when the thermal limit is exceeded, but it doesn't shut down the SB-900. The price was the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars. But, if you do weddings with the SB-900, this is a must have battery pack.

Fast Recycle TimeI will use this product for weddings and on location portrait shoots where a fast recycle time is vital. Testing the SD-9 prior to a portrait shoot this weekend I found the following while using NIMH low drain batteries: * 47 full power shots at the rate of one every 3 seconds until the SB-900's thermal protection shut the flash off. This is only 2 more flashes then when using just the SB-900's internal batteries. * 620 full power flashes at the rate of one very 15 seconds (not including periodic 1 1/2 minute stoppages while the flash cooled). * The really good news is the recycle time is under 1 second for a full power flash! The SD-9 seems a little pricey, but it appears well made and the fast recycle time makes the SB-900 a MUCH more useful tool.

Very Pleased!I bought the SD-9 to go with my SB-900. I have two SD-8a packs that go with my SB-800 flashes, and they work great. But the refined engineering of the SD-9 with its removable battery clip, more versatile case, 8-batteries instead of 6, made it worth the investment for me. I use it a lot in fast-paced environments like weddings, sports (I just finished photographing the Family Circle Cup), and portraits where I'm using high-speed flash sync at shutter speeds up to 1/8,000 of a second. This REALLY drains the power out of the flash and having the extra power of the SD-9 is a huge help. Only downside is you can use the older SD-8a with the new SB-900/700...but you can NOT use the new SD-9 with the older SB-800/600 flashes.

No more hot flash and overheatingI am a serious amateur photographer. I love the SB-900 in conjunction with Nikon's D300. However, I've become frustrated and annoyed with the SB-900 over heating and thus missing those precious moments or moments that can't be recaptured. The SD-9 battery pack appears to be a perfect solution to the SB-900 overheating. I recently shot an event with the SD-9 attached to the SB-900 flash. I no longer reserved by flash to ensure that I got the highlights of the event but pushed the flash to take several photos; and thanks to the SD-9 it allowed the SB-900 not to overheat.

Faster flash recycle, better picturesI like the extra flash capacity with shorter time between flashes. I use it with rechargable batteries and the cost is therefore only the intial outlay for the batteries. I use my D90 handheld (no tripod) with the battery pack affixed to the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera. I wrap the extra cord around the base of the flash to keep it out of the way. The only problem is that the when attached to the bottom of my camera it does not screw down tightly enough to avoid the battery pack from slipping out of parallel to the base of the camera. I added a small piece of nonslip shelf liner between the camera and Battery pack and that took care of the problem.

Greatly Improved Recycle TimeI bought this with the SB-910 AF, in order to shoot fast changing action on stage. I needed the very short recycle times. I used NiMH batteries, and at times it recycled fast enough to shoot continuously every 1/2 second or so. Compared to the competition, this unit is more expensive, but study the recycle time ratings: no other battery pack will get you the short recycles, at least from looking at the specifications (I haven't tried the cheaper alternatives). The form and packaging are superb, the durability looks great, and the battery trays are very well made, durable, easy to load. I can't think of a single CON about this unit.

Peace of mind for those long shoot!I bought this for a wedding where I knew the flash would be going most of the time.It is expensive but you won't be disappointed by the quality or reliability of this product. Bear in mind that the circuitry of the product affects the battery performance and therefore a genuine product is definitely a wiser option! Easily fits on a belt or inside a jacket's pocket. Good reliable solid product! Used it with Eneloop AA batteries.

I would buy this product againThis product is everything they said it was. The recycling time of the flash is great. Better then I had expected. The pack last me through a 12 hour event shoot without having to change the batteries.
