APC 550 Reviews

I really needed two of these

This is my second one my first one is for my iMac my second one for my AppleTV. Our power goes out a lot because of faulty wiring and this saves my equipment and gives me peace of mind.

Works great except for the annoying audible alert

The APC UPS 550VA did what it was supposed to do during our recent power outage. It seamlessly switched over to battery power when AC power went out. I had plenty of time to wrap up my work and shut down the computer safely. However, the audible reminder tone was frequent and absolutely annoying after a few minutes. I had to turn it off to save my sanity. Later when our cell phones needed a charging, I had to move the UPS to the garage to charge the phones. This was extremely inconvenient and made me wish I had purchased the 600VA which has an audible mute.

Great device; works excellently

This is my second device of this type. This battery backup works great. The battery replacement is the star point of this device. It is much cheaper to replace the battery than buying a whole new device. I have tried other brand power supplies that are cheaper, but do not have replaceable batteries. Those power supplies always died, while the APC still goes strong. I definitely recommend this battery backup.

Don't work without it

These units have saved my work several times in the past. In areas of frequent power problems, they keep data secure. Batteries are easy to replace every four or five years. Highly recommended.

Good Unit For Small Office Deployment

This is a good solution for a small office deployment. Plenty of receptacles for a basic workstation. Not quite as bulky as units that will provide similar run time. Cord could be a bit longer.

This is obviously a best seller for a reason. I'm glad I listened to the reviews and made this purchase. Great backup unit, does its job well and haven't had a problem once!

Check your unit- mine had a manufacturing defect

By Should have tested before

I've had my unit for years and the battery finally gave out. By chance I used an outlet tester on it and was surprised to find that one of the backed up outlets showed "open neutral". I opened it up and saw the problem. The metal bar inside that has clamps that grip the plug didn't have the clamps for this outlet. The defect is circled in blue in the photo, it should look like the one circled in red. The unit has worked for me for years, just never used this particular outlet on it I guess. So it gets some points for that. But take away some points for how this ever got out of their factory with this defect.

Good

question

What is the amp-hour capacity of the battery in the APC Back-UPS 550?
Asked by: Anonymous
I replace the batteries all the time and they are 12v 7AH, although you can use a 7.5AH or 8AH battery in them too as long as they fit (most do, but check the dimensions) and you may get slightly longer run times (I have never tested this, though).

Will this work with a Mc Mini and does it come with softsware that works with a a mac? Can I gert standalonw SW thqt will sork with the outdated APC UPS I've been using with a G5 for mode than seven years??
Asked by: Ross
Thank you for your inquiry. This unit should work with the Mac Mini. I would just confirm that the Mac doesn't draw more than 330 watts of power. Anything over that will overload the UPS. Unfortunately our PowerChute Personal edition is not supported on Mac. However you can use built in energy saving features of Mac to provide a graceful shutdown of the system.

question

What is ther lifetime of the battery cartridge?
Asked by: Isaias R.
I agree with Luis N in that a UPS battery in these models have run us approximately 4 to 5 years. Once depleted, we typically just purchase a new one and have a local recycling vendor who obtains depleted ones from us at no charge.
