    Tascam LA-80mkII reviews

    LA-80mkII 8-Channel Unbalanced-to-Balanced Audio Converter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would prefer to give 4.5 stars... This was an item that I really needed, being that I have seven unbalanced signals that I run to my board at once and only have one unbalanced line-in available. Running the lines into this unit and then to my Tascam board gives me the benefit of the hotter balanced signal, as well as the possibility of lower noise. The LA-80 mk.II is sturdy and feels well-made and is super-convenient if you have to run a bunch of unbalanced gear (mine are a drum machine, sample/looper, and synth). The price (especially if discounted) is good for the number of channels you get and the signal sounds as if it passes through with good transparency. I don't feel like I hear 100% transparency, but it is very close to the signal going in. I tested this by running things through my one line-in and then going through the LA-80 in as much of an A/B way as possible. Listening to my Korg Minilogue through both, it sounded as if it lost a smidgen of warmth through the LA-80, but nothing too disheartening AND in fairness, it's not an apples to apples comparison between the line-in of the board and the LA-80 because I had to goose the preamp gain on the my board quite a bit to achieve the same level between both units, which may have added a warmth that wasn't really there in the first place (and which I could also dial in with EQ either during tracking or mixing)...definitely not a deal breaker at all. I heard no difference doing the same test with my DR-880 drum machine. So, overall, I'm very very happy with the LA-80 mk.II...it's a pretty specialized piece of gear, but based on all the research I did and in my experience with it, this is easily the best bang for the buck to get this particular job done. Well done, Tascam!
