The optical design is comprised of 8 elements in 7 groups, along with 3 prisms, and a built-in diopter is continuously adjustable from -2.8 to +1.3. The viewfinder has click-stop settings for 15, 21, 25, 28, and 35mm focal lengths, and parallax lines show the image cut-off at 3.28' (1m), with marked values for 1.3x and 1.5x crop sensor formats.

A real zoom wide angle view finder

Voigtlander makes the best single focal length brightline view finders, and this zoom view finder is top quality as well. The view is bright and sharp. The zoom ring has detents for typical focal lengths, and it can be set for in-between sizes as well. There is a little barrel distortion at the wide end, but that is true for single focal length viewers that wide too. There is a diopter adjustment. The hot/cold shoe attachment foot has a locking ring on it to prevent accidental drops, which is a good thing because the viewer is a bit on the expensive side, but not nearly as high as the much larger Leica zoom.

I shoot film and never go above a 50mm, so this is the perfect accessory to leave on my M-3 at all times. It eliminates the major hassle of switching single focal length finders, and gives a clear, relatively undistorted view that is not blocked by lens hoods or the front of larger lenses. These features carry over nicely to my other rangefinders as well, even those with 21mm framelines. I actually prefer to use this finder most of the time instead of the built-in finders on my various bodies. Construction is very rugged, finish is excellent, and the overall size is quite reasonable. The locking foot is a very nice and intelligent feature. An invaluable tool for every rangefinder shooter, and probably for mirrorless SLR shooters who want better viewing than a digital screen provides.
