AJA LHi overview

  • 1Description

The KONA LHi Capture Card from Aja is designed to bridge the gap between legacy analog devices and the latest products using 3Gbps SDI and HDMI by providing editing, monitoring, and mastering of pro-quality video in a powerful yet affordable system. This unit comes with a breakout cable, and can also be connected to an optional breakout box for rackmount I/O convenience and additional connectivity in the form of BNC digital AES/EBU connectors and RCA monitoring jacks.

KONA LHi uses the Aja Control Panel application to configure various hardware parameters and can also be used to auto-detect input format & frame rate and configure hardware-based up/down/cross-conversions
Use this device to interface with devices such as an HDMI-enabled camera, an HD-SDI VTR connection, and legacy analog video equipment
By way of the card's "Input PassThrough" mode, you can configure it to act as a converter within your computer, allowing you to embed or disembed audio or convert a signal like HDMI to HD-SDI
It features full, 10-bit, broadcast-quality, motion-adaptive SD to HD up-conversion, HD to HD cross-conversion, HD to SD down-conversion, and automatic HD/SD 12-bit component analog output
All of KONA LHi's conversions are hardware-based, therefore they are available all the time, even during ingest or playback
Outputs can be configured independently allowing you to have simultaneous HD and SD output, or two different types of HD (720 or 1080) output at the same time via cross-conversion
The card offers DVCPRO HD hardware acceleration
HDMI v1.3a with Deep Color at 30/36 bits per pixel on input & output is supported
It offers 12-bit HD analog component input & output
The card features 10-bit, hardware-based, real-time up/down/cross-conversions
12-bit SD analog component, composite, or S-Video input & output are available
Dynamic RT hardware acceleration is a standard feature
The card features (2) channels of balanced XLR AES digital audio and (2) channels of balanced XLR analog audio input & output
8-channel SDI embedded audio input & output is included
HD/SD Genlock and RS-422 machine control are standard features
It supports LTC input on the reference input
This solution is compatible with Final Cut Studio applications, Adobe applications, and most industry-standard applications

    AJA LHi reviews

KONA LHi Capture Card is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from +++++ There is no better solution for HD/SD video producers. This AJA powering Mac not only with video but also with PS! Strongly recommended. Also, if you work with P2 you can find P2 to FCS transferring boost!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get Premier Pro On Your Monitors I needed to get Adobe Premiere Pro to my HD Monitor. This board slipped right into my Mac and comes with all the necessary cables. Had to call Kona Tech Support to assist with upgrading my software but they were very helpful in solving my issue. No problems since. Works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! It is an amazing card like a Ferrari car who can fly and cruise too! We do have some valuable footage in SD format and now we are able to up-convert into HD in RT.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't understand the other reviews. In the 1990's I had a Media100 system with its own breakout box (Vincent card) which was relatively simple and worked very well. As such proprietary (and seamless) digitizers are no longer available, edit systems refer us to boards like the Kona card. In my case, the LHi was recommended by the manufacturer for my Apple system. I had a deadline on a project and needed a digitizer. After reading the reviews I felt comfortable that the LHi would do the trick (as many reported being up and running within 15 minutes). It was pricey, but needing something of high quality I went for it, in the hopes it would save me time down the line. After some experience with the card I've come to the following conclusion: The Kona LHi card is steaming, festering, oozing, undulating, malignant, cankerous, massive pile of putrid, rotting trash. The driver, of which there are dozens of variants, is extremely product specific. So depending on the hardware, software, OS, version of your application, etc. you must use and install a different driver for each. The most recent driver does not work on all configurations, causing you to back track, search and do a lot of trial and error in finding the correct one. In addition, the card has settings for at least 100 different types of resolutions, sources & formats. If you don't know exactly what is coming out of your source (and configure the settings accordingly) that source often won't even be recognized. After finding the correct driver, after finding the correct formats and resolutions, after updating and installing and configuring and testing- the card still wouldn't reliably get video into my system. Sometimes I'd get video (using FCP 7, Media 100 and FCP X) and sometimes it would just be blank. When I did get video and or sound, it would often not be of useful quality. Why so angry, you ask? Isn't this an issue of Apple and not AJA? No, and I'll tell you why... because there's no good reason for all the complications. With a simple HD camcorder and firewire plug (which I eventually settled on using because I had no time to do anything else) I was not only able to import higher quality video than the LHi, but was able to do it completely independent of my system configuration, without jumping through driver and setting hoops, without spending hours on the web researching & debugging -and without spending $1,500 for a piece of junk masquerading as a tool to help video editors get their work done. Why they make it so hard when it doesn't have to be is maddening.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great capture card I first had the IoLA, but it didn't support HD formats, so I traded it in and got the Kona LHi. It supports almost every common resolution and frame rate, and it can also up convert, downvert, and cross convert. Installation and set up is very easy. It was my first time ever installing any hardware in any computer, so I was very nervous. It was literally plug-n-play. The only small con is that the fan is a little loud, but after a while you tune it out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Card for Video Editing We now have one of these cards in all our machines. They are great high quality cards that work great in Mac Pros on FCP 7 and FCP X. A key feature of us is the integrated deck control which makes it a great professional capture option. On the downside the mini-HDMI cable it ships with is a tough item to replace. It is not micro, but mini so you may want to order another when you get this card so you can use HDMI in and out.
