Elgato 1VC104001001 Reviews

Works very well most of the time

I'm transferring home movies from VHS compact and 8mm formats to digital; over 80 tapes. These tapes are from 14 to 30 years old. The mylar and ferrous oxide have endured the test of time beautifully. The source machines are a VCR and an 8mm video camera. The target machine is a Windows 10 laptop. The Elgato hardware and software does a great job most of the time. I've had to retransfer about 10 of the tapes due to audio and video getting out of sync from several seconds to several minutes rendering the digital versions unplayable. Several times while transferring, after one tape finishes, I select the "Again" option to transfer a subsequent tape. The app's cache may be getting corrupted by using the "Again" option. It may work best to close the app and restart it between tape transfers. I've only got six tapes left to transfer and overall, I'm very impressed with Elgato's hardware and software. I'm going to use Pinnacle Studio 25 to edit the digital videos to add menus for scene selections and to remove some high pitched noise from a couple of videos. Thanks for a good product, Elgato!

I've used elgato for over a year now to transfer 100s of hours of video from VCRs, camcorders, and more. It works fantastic! Highly recommend this device!

Great looking device, very sad performance.

Simple to connect RCA to USB on iMac, but very disappointed with the video output. The captured movies are banded, with blothchy color. Same VHS tape and player performed well on my 32" TV, so it isn't the tape or the VCR causing the problem. I used my iPad to film the TV screen and that worked much better. I also tried using my iPhone to capture the video on the TV screen and that worked marginally better than the iPad. Screenshots of the two movies are attached.

How is this not 5 stars?

I don’t like to take time to write reviews but this device and software took away all my frustration and wasted time. I tried several different ways to digitize my VHS and DV camera videos. Burn to DVD and copy to hard drive took forever. Connecting Firewire1 to FW2 on an external hard drive which had FW3 that could connect to an older Mac was pricey but worked. But then I used iMovie and Final Cut to import and I would have 100 files as small as 1 sec. for no reason and editing was a nightmare. The Elgato is USB and Super VHS just worked. It would make separate files for each date (I think that’s correct). Nevertheless the breaks were appropriate to changing scenes. It even connects to a thermal imaging monocular and records the video. This review is about 3-4 years overdue.

Terrible

Have to be a sleuth to find the app to download. I connected the device to my VCR and computer via the instructions and installed the required software. When I run the software it just pops up a window that states: "Please connect your Elgato Video Capture hardware to any USB 2.0 port." I tried unplugging the USB cable several times and tried multiple computers with the same results.

Used to be a great product – but crashes on M1 Mac

I used to LOVE this product, but it continually crashes at the VERY END of video transfers. I think this is because the software is no longer compatible with the latest (ie. M1) Macs. I'm providing the crash logs to Elgato in the hopes they will troubleshoot.

Copies from cam corder to computer, but that's all, folks. Often quits in the middle of a video clip. Trim function is the only function available and has limited usefulness. It can be difficult to figure out where your video clips end up. Starting/stopping download can be hit or miss. S-video connection is not possible without yet another cable. Would not recommend at this price. I guess video newbies expect to be punched.
