Westcott 2200 Overview

  • 1Description

The Westcott Micro Apollo light modifier eliminates red-eye, brightens colors and softens harsh light from flash.  The lightweight frame also functions as a gel holder.  It is easy to install and remove, and tucks away into a corner of a camera bag.

Superior Construction
The Westcott Mirco Apollo has translucent material constructed of ripstop nylon, instead of plastic which easily rips and shortens the lifespan of the product.
Superior Light Gathering
The Westcott Micro Apollo has a highly-reflective silver surface upon the inner surfaces of the side panels to maximize your flash's power.

    Westcott 2200 Reviews

    Micro Apollo Softbox - 5 x 8- (13 x 20cm) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 88.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't bother on a Nikon SB-800 or SB-900 I'm sure this works well from a lighting point of view but you will never get the chance since it won't mount properly. Here' why... The velcro mounts on the softbox are planer but the sides of the speedflashes are angled. If < represents the angled sides of the flash (exaggerated, of course) and | represents the planar surface of one of the two metal tabs with preinstalled velcro, you can see that there will be only one linear flimsy velcro connection on either side of the speedflash... |< The softbox sags under its own weight. I've chosen to keep the softbox with plans to design a better mount.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use it all the time with SB-900 Did not like this on the SB-600 due to the small size of the flash. With the SB-900 this softbox is excellent. Direct flash no problem (I leave the Nikon diffuser on) and really softens bounce flash for wide shots. Folds completely flat goes everywhere. I used it in the delivery room when my last son was born. Great results. This will definitely go with me wherever I travel. Fits perfectly in those outer bag pockets that you never quite know what to put in them. I mount using a Honl speedstrap around the speedlight. The assembly will move around if you push on it but it has never fallen off on me. Make the metal mounting tabs a little bigger (to accommodate a larger patch of velcro) and this is 5 stars.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could Be Better I use this with a TorchLED on-camera light, which has a hard quality without the light modifier, so this item is a 'must have'. The problems with this item is the single built in diffuser (heavy/thick) and no egg-crate. Certainly it would be a bit more expensive to add these items, but if the single built-in diffuser gets soiled, the entire item is useless. The lack of an egg-crate leaves the unit with only on mode, wide. The unit could also use air vents to prevent heat build up.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Westcott's Best I'm invested in several Westcott products that I endorse without reservation, but the Micro Apollo Softbox has proved a mixed blessing. It can give you good results but it's a Rube Goldberg contraption that's frustrating to mount on a speedlight and awkward to use in the field. I'm not at liberty to recommend competitors here, so I'll just suggest that you continue to count on Westcott for quality lighting gear - as I do - but shop around some more for your camera mounted softbox.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little box I bought this small box to use for a beach shoot where I knew it would likely be too windy for an umbrella. It did a great job of softening the light. I use a Honl strap rather than ruining my flashes by putting sticky velcro on them directly. The box came with the soft velcro sides attached. I simply pulled those off and replaced them with 2 patches of the hooked sides that came with the box. What I like about it is that it allows me to use a gel on the Honl strap vertically while attaching the box to the sides of the flash. It stayed on pretty firmly and that was a pleasant surprise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from OK Don't expect a big softbox look from this. It's better than harsh direct flash, but not by much. Combine the minor improvement with the decreased flash output and extra setup time, and I'm not even sure it's worth it. However, when you're outside at night without a bounce-wall this is still better than bare flash.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not up to the task I had a chance to try this product in the field photographing Central American reptiles and amphibians with my Sigma Macro 150mm and a Canon 5DIII. Verdict: the images were softened adequately for both large and small subjects. Unfortunately, the construction and design, while allowing for easy packing and transport, is just too flimsy for serious field (outdoor) use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Light Diffusor I use the softbox for weddings on my Canon 430 ex II. It gives off great lighting. I'm very happy with the results.
