This 45" White Satin Umbrella with Removable Black Cover from Westcott can be used in standard bounce mode with the black cover installed or in shoot-through mode like a softbox with the cover removed.

Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject and the strength of the light supply being used.

Westcott umbrellas are rated safe for use with hot lights up to 300 watts.
This size is perfect for a 1 or 2 person headshot, a head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have Umbrella They made a great umbrella greater! The frame has been built with fiberglass ribs which makes it more durable for those windy days! The white satin gives great light diffusion. As you know the bigger the better so by it being 45 the glow that is gives off will more than supply the soft light needed. Also, lets not forget you can remove the black cover and use as a shoot through umbrella as well. A must have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good so far. I use this with my Manfrotto 1051 light stand with swivel umbrella adapter and Canon 430exII and fully extended there is no problems with balance. At least in doors. I have not tested it outdoors with wind. Although I'm sure a weight of some kind can be applied or if you have an assistant. Umbrella comes in a plastic bag that is reusable and reasonably well made. It may not last forever but it works well and is reasonable for the price. The umbrella fits with the 1051 stand into a Manfrotto LBAG90 with no problems. Could probably fit 2 light stands and up to 4 of these 45in umbrellas with out any problems.I have not taken off the backing to use as shoot through yet but I do not think it will be a big problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great umbrella - convenient & affordable There's not too much to say for an umbrella, other than... 1) Does it easily and effectively open and close - yes. 2) Is the removable black cover easy to remove - yes. 3) When the removable black cover is on, is it loose, or does it stretch - no. 4) Is it durable and strong - yes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value Good umbrellas. I hate to say it but... there is no such thing as durable or well made umbrellas. I see complaints about umbrellas all the time and the simple fact is that umbrellas will wear out. These, as well as other, umbrellas are not made to withstand hurricane force winds, rough handling, or any physical extremes. They will certainly last longer in the studio than on the road. For the price, these umbrellas are relatively well made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Umbrella by Westcott I waited too long to purchase this umbrella with the removable black cover. This saves me so much time. Fiddling with the other umbrellas to get them just so was a huge pain. With the removable cover, life became simpler. If I had one con, it would be that the black cover is just a bit hard to remove and put back on. Perhaps I haven't fiddled with it enough to find out all of its secrets yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ENHANCES LIGHTING OF PRODUCT SHOTS I do product shots. I Light with strobe and LED with gels. I use gels to add attractive color casts to products. Blue for chrome. Orange for browns etc. The umbrella bounces the light from the light source from the back of the product so I have light front to back. This adds shadow free lighting to the product. The umbrella reflects the light parabalically so it is focused. But the satin difuses it so it is a soft light that is good for photos. It works well for flash strobes. Nikon SB 910 is what I use. The shaft of the umbrella and the end tip of the umbrella are the same diameter. So you can make a bracket with a hole in it to hold the umbrella on either end. This makes it really versatile for holding the umbrella on light stands. The black cover keeps the reflector clean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from maintains color temperature of flash tub the one thing i discovered in post processing in lightroom was the lack of a need to change/correct the color balance. i found that the reflecive surfaces withing the umbrella did not modify, or color the light emitted by the flash tube. the softboxes that i was/had been using caused a major, but correctable color shift.
