Westcott 2016 Overview

This 45" White Satin Umbrella with Removable Black Cover from Westcott can be used in standard bounce mode with the black cover installed or in shoot-through mode like a softbox with the cover removed.

Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject and the strength of the light supply being used.

Westcott umbrellas are rated safe for use with hot lights up to 300 watts.
This size is perfect for a 1 or 2 person headshot, a head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

A step up from lesser expensive umbrellas

Better quality than the lesser expensive ones that I also have. In particular, I like the fiberglass rods rather than cheaper metal ones that tend to kink. With two 45-inch ones, each on a light stand with a speedlight I was able to adequately light a group of about 50 people.

Good umbrella

Great umbrella for the price. I have not yet removed the black cover and shot through it, I'm sure it will be tricky to get it back on. But overall its a good, easy to set up umbrella, good for traveling.

Works terrifically with a Neewer LED panel light. I use it as basic lighting for my office as the light is nicer than the fixture on the ceiling.

Competent umbrella quality; should stand up to frequent use

Not surprised that this umbrella was built as well as it is. Someone told me that the company started as a rain umbrella manufacturer a long time ago. I use this as one of my modifiers for 400ws strobe heads. The light is perfect for skin tones, with a subtle shading. I haven't use it yet to shoot through, but the quality of the nylon should work fine as a diffuser. The open/close mechanism is robust enough that I'm not worried about failure in the field.

Love the Light...Hate the quality

I absolutely love the quality of light out of they umbrella. People complain it's not pure white, well duh - it's the perfect cross between pure white and pure silver - not too flat and not too harsh - just right. Now the bad part - the quality of construction on this umbrella is bad. At the price point I really think the umbrella should be more solid. I've owned several of them (and treat them very carefully) and the stretcher arms just don't hold up - they break or bend way too easily and it frustrates me as you can see how I feel about the light from these. I wish Westcott would overhaul the basic umbrella mechanism to make them more robust.

First impressions

I have only used this umbrella for a few shoots. However I think the price:performance ratio is good - for the price, this umbrella works well. The white satin interior produced a nice, soft spread of light when used with a Godox AD200 + Magmod MagDome. The black exterior cloth is of a good thickness for (a) preventing light transmission and (b) protecting the white satin cloth. I also like that the center of the black cloth is a metal ring that slips over the tip of the umbrella when removing or replacing the cloth. Strength of the fiberglas ribs? Seem fine for now - and I only expect to use this umbrella in a studio setting.

Does the Westcott 2016 have a diffuser that I can order? Or is there a diffuser from another company that I could use on it?
Asked by: Scarlett
As far as I know this umbrella has a diffuser and a black cover. So you can use the diffuser when shooting through the umbrella with the black cover removed. With the black cover attached, you are using it as a reflector.

question

Is 45 the measurement of the arc or the straight diameter on the open side?
Asked by: Greg M.
The 45-inch measurement is the measurement of the diameter of the open end of the umbrella. All umbrellas are measured by the diameter (the measurement across the center) of the open end of the umbrella.

question

Is this Umbrella compatible with the Profoto B1?
Asked by: Louis F.
This umbrella is compatible with a B1. The diffused front of the B1 fills the umbrella nicely when placed near the end of the umbrellas shaft.

question

Is the cover completely removable? I'd like to have the option of using the cover on a Westcott Halo. The Halo doesn't come with such a cover and Westcott appears to not sell individual covers. Thank you.
Asked by: Ricky
yes, the model I have is completely removable. It comes off each umbrella tip and the top point. Hope this helps.

question

The length and diameter of the umbrella when folded, as I am planning to carry it for outdoor shoots? Does it have a strap to fasten after folding ?
Asked by: Shree L.
Hello Shree.I own this umbrella and it is well made. The umbrella comes with a fabric carrying case that you slip the folded umbrella into. This carrying case has a strap sewn onto it. The umbrella & carrying case assembly looks like a pool cue-stick case when they are combined. It is very clean & professional looking, and most likely protects the umbrella better than a simple closing strap on the umbrella itself would. The umbrella lacks a strap on it. You slide it into its case and I feel it is much better than a strap to fasten it.This fabric carrying case also keep the umbrella clean, inside and out.The umbrella when closed is 44 long.It has a 9 circumference at the widest part, when it is in its carrying case. The carrying case is tappered to match the taper of the closed umbrella. The carrying case fits into a a supplied, 3 diameter, strongly-crafted cardboard tube for storage. When all of this used, it protects the umbrella to a high degree.
