    Manfrotto 1314B reviews

Background Support System (9' Width) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 76.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Studio on the Go. I use this portable background stand to go on location and take portrait photos of government officials and business executives and this setup makes it possible. With this background stand I can turn any office or boardroom into a professional studio in just a few minutes. You can use paper rolls, muslin and collapsible (pop-up) backgrounds, you name it just clamp it on and you're in business. Here's a Production tip: I attach a small lighthead on an adjustible boom-arm to each background stand down low just above where the legs spread out. This adds an adjustible fill light to your background and keeps your lightheads off the floor. Works like a charm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice! Well worth the extra cost. I first had the cheaper Savage system, and was fairly disappointed, then I tried this one and I can absolutely say that I whole heartedly recommend this one over the Savage, even with the nearly $150 price difference. It's MUCH better built and MUCH better designed. The stands are air cusioned, packs small, and lock together for transport. The bar itself twist-lock to keep the length locked to what you want. Even the case has hanger loop and a strap inside to hold the bar and stands together so they don't clank around. Bottom line: get this set if you use backdrops with any kind of regularity. You'll be glad you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Construction and Easy to Setup I use this support system in a home studio and on location. It is sturdy and easy to assemble and disassemble. the light stands are air assist so when you release the locking mechanism the poles do not just slam down. The hardware is top quality and seem like they will provide years of service in heavy use. Cross pole is build solid too and can hold the weight of a large 10X20 muslin back drop although the ligth stands only extend to 7.75'. It comes with a very nice carrying bag that holds all the pieces without a struggle to get them in the bag. The bag is very durable and has carry handles and a shoulder sling. I would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I will never need to buy another... I purchased this support system for a on-site event studio setup. I spent the extra money on a Manfrotto product and was not disappointed. The quality of the product is noticed as soon as you start to unpack it. I knew that since I was planning on using the support system at events, it would have to be sturdy and this product was just that. Setup was smooth. I did not use sandbags to hold the stands down. The stands have a wide base and with even some subjects getting too close to the back of the muslin (where it curves up from the floor, the support stands held their ground even with the extra pressure. I will always look for Manfrotto products first.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Stands Lost 1 star because cross-beam is still too long... I haven't used any other kits to make any comparisons but this kit is great quality. The stands are very nice. They are air cushioned which really helps especially if you use heavier devices on them. The cross-member is adjustable but maybe Manfrotto could've made it collapse to the same length as the stands so the kit could be more compact/ portable. If you are looking for additional stands, although they only go 8 feet compared to other standard 9 ft models, get this background kit. Don't forget your orange handled clamps and gaffer tape. They are cheap and helpful when working with paper rolls. FYI, I went with the Savage paper rolls.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Reasonable starter set, light duty This background support system is not bad. It's a reasonable moderate-duty starter set, but not really rugged enough for location use in pro environments. I ended up returning it and putting together a stronger set by purchasing the same Manfrotto extendable crossbar to be used with two stronger, taller stands. On the plus side, the two included stands are air-cushioned. meaning they don't slam down while being lowered. Once folded down for storage, the two stands snap together making bagging easier. When not using the stands to support a backdrop, you can use them as regular light stands suitable for Speedlites or small strobes. The crossbar is adjustable width. It extends to fit a variety of backdrop widths but still collapses short enough to fit inside the carry bag. Manfrotto includes two small clamps to help stabilize the background roll after the crossbar has been threaded through the roll's core, although simple A-clamps from the hardware store work better. The zippered carry bag is well-sized for the two folded-down stands and crossbar, and has a velcro strap inside as well as an outer shoulder strap and carry handle. Good job with the bag. I ended up returning this setup to B&H for three reasons: 1. most importantly, the stands flex and are not sturdy enough for heavy paper rolls; 2. the stands don't go quite high enough to photograph tall adults (models over 6' run out of headroom or force the photographer to stand very far back); 3. the crossbar's screw mechanism make it a tight fit through typical paper rolls (inconvenience; you have to adjust the screws to make the bar fit through the paper roll's core, then open them back up to mount the crossbar on the stands). This background support system is not terrible. It's adequate for the semi-pro use shooting shorter or seated adults, children and pets on location. You should sandbag the light stands and hope that nobody (rambunctious kids, careless adults, etc.) steps on the rear of the sweep or bumps the light stands. This support system is, however, marginal height-wise for photography of groups or tall persons. It did not inspire confidence when used with heavy paper rolls or in situations where the stands could be bumped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Starter Kit After using someone else's background support system to see if this is a type of photography I would like to get into, I decided to go with this Manfrotto kit. Setting it up was easy and the system is fairly stable (indoors on tight weave carpet) - wobbles slightly because it isn't a rigid frame, but I think all similar systems will. The equipment seems like it will be durable - time will tell. For those wondering how it could be better: (1) these light stands are not air-cushioned or heavy-duty but you could purchase stands with this feature separately in the future to move up, (2) the cross bar tightens to the top of the light stands so to switch backgrounds, you would probably lower everything, switch backgrounds then raise it back up. Manfrotto has U-hook background holders that make switching easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality, Stability, Functionality I'm using this background support system for both still photography and video assignments with rolled seamless paper. The design of the stands with their interlocking stack make them easy to store and even easier to set up. The cross bar extends and locks firmly and mounts onto the stands as you would expect. My only minor gripe is that the fittings on each end of the cross bar don't fit easily through the tube of the seamless paper roll. They mount on the stands nicely, but you have to either screw in the retaining screw all the way or remove it for the bar to fit. (Look closely at the photos of how the cross bar attaches to the stand and you'll see what I mean.) This is only an inconvenience, but I would expect a product designed to be used with seamless rolls would have given this a little more consideration.
