Tascam HS-P82 overview

  • 1Description

The HS-P82 from Tascam is a professional-quality field audio recorder that offers 8 tracks of high-definition audio recording in a rugged and reliable body. The unit has 8 XLR mic inputs, each with phantom power and analog limiting. Recessed front-panel trim controls for each channel prevent accidental changes. In addition to the 8 individual tracks, a stereo mixdown can also be recorded for instant use during editing.

The unit captures audio at rates up to 24-bit/192kHz onto industry-standard CompactFlash cards. Because CF cards have no moving parts, they are incredibly reliable and durable. The Broadcast WAV audio files also include iXML metadata for use with a variety of audio and video editing systems. The unit has a USB port for convenient file transfer to any computer.

In the field power is key, so the HS-P82 provides a variety of options. It can operate on AA or NP batteries, the included AC adapter, an external DC input, or a V-mount adapter for Endura batteries. Other features include a built-in slate mic, a 5-second prerecord buffer, and headphone output alert signal.

For high-resolution applications, the unit has a set of AES/EBU connectors, which allow you to connect high-end A/D converters and preamplifiers. SMPTE timecode I/Os, video, and word sync connectors are provided for keeping perfect sync with other A/V devices. The unit is controlled via a color touchscreen for fast, simple operation.

    Tascam HS-P82 reviews

HS-P82 8-Channel Field Audio Recorder is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent 8 track recorder Overall an excellent recorder, you cannot record eight tracks (only four) if you go above 24 bit 96 kHz but not a dealbreaker for me, at this price point nothing on the market can compare with this units pristine preamps, ultra low noise floor, mirror recording feature and high quality construction , overall a great buy! I have an Edirol r-4 pro that I have been using for many years and in comparison this units recording quality is light-years above, easily comparable to sound devices and in some cases maybe better, awesome pres with loads of headroom!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this machine! This thing is heavy and kind of tank-like but it has top tier amps and converters which many people have said are better than the sound devices recorders which are nearly three times the cost of this unit. As long as you don't mid the weight, who cares? What's great about the HS-P82 is that the components are so good you don't need to go out and buy an additional mixer pre or headphone amp. Everything that's in there is already the best. Even after you pony up the cash for a porta-brace and NP-1 batteries/charger you will still have saved several thousand dollars over the sound devices offerings. When you take into consideration the incredibly sturdy build quality, the awesome user interface, plethora of battery and power options, the digital I/O, the dual CF card slots with mirror writing capabilities, the alert system for CF write errors and Db peaks, the amazing pre amps and headphone amp....how could you not buy this? I will keep this machine forever. I love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from TASCAM. Sound Devices? Tascam? YES. Used and heard the sound devices. Was about to go for the bigger model but something kept nagging in the back of my mind about the specs on the Tascam and of course like all of you that are either replacing or supplementing your actual mobile recording rig as an engineer , or a location sound person, was wondering if they beefed up their gear to handle the rigors of ...locations. The answer is : yes. But how does it sound? These PreAmps kick over the Sound Devices for starters and I am an audio professional that does location as well... so I am used to $2000 a channel sounding pres. Also I am close to many boutique audiophile builders so I know what I am talking about. It looks pompous to read my writing but please understand it's because of the excitement in this model that it may sound arrogant. I just got so curious about this thing and the location peeps all buy the same things... so me being a tester of high end gear (and of course I had my reservations about tascam being that I'd not tried their high end stuff) I decided to put it to the test. The limiters are barely noticeable, touch screen is a dream, new firmware you can gang control , CF Mirror record on 2 cards, edit on the fly , change file names, hook up the keyboard or just use the touchscreen that has a full keypad OH and the best? FULL SIZE XLR! love that. It looks big? it's a little bigger, but really this thing can sit back and be the nerve center or you can get ANY NP-1 type battery and I found a charger plus 2 Li-Ion 4400 14.2 volt batteries for $$ on a certain auction based site - sorry guys I know you sell em, but these are a battery type that is used so much that it's begging to go walking. The Porta-Brace bag is really nice if you look for the right one- they make a specific model. The set up you can do without cracking a manuel. SLATE MIC! wow I could go on, but really it's a bargain and it's good enough to record actual music with as well so I think Tascam (they told me they're going after this market hard) has a winner here that should put a sizable dent in the SD market share, if it doesn't, then we have many scared narrow thinkers and I'll be the one smiling so do what you want, I'm never going to SD again... oh and Tascam loves talking to you , believe me they take care of their peeps!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This machine rocks! I use this recorder predominantly for film work - I have been at it now for 24 years! I love this product, there are a couple of minor alterations I would'nt mind seeing on Tascams next model up from this item should there be one, then again bang for buck nothing else compares or comes this close! I am a fan, I looked around alot and this is by far the best money can buy. Quality, durability and sustainable so far, and I have owned and used my machine since 2011. Don't think I am biased, I didnt choose this product because I used to own other Tascam products before this one, quite the contrary, I have never owned a single Tascam product prior, ever! I have only come here to show support for this product and I hope that there are other happy owners of this product out there, who feel the same way too. Good luck and thanks Tascam!!
