Nikon HN-30 Overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Nikon HN-30 Reviews

HN-30 Lens Hood is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Solid hood, but it is plastic This is a newer version of the hood, so it is plastic, not metal, like the original version. That's one star gone. The second star downgrade is the result of not being able to put a filter on the lens, when the hood is on. If one wanted to put a filter on (CP) then attach the hood to the filter, that might work, but CP filters aren't typically designed to handle the weight of a lens hood on their front threads. The last thing that is a bit inconvenient is that it doesn't lock on reversed. It will fit around the front of the lens, but would rattle round - which puts the matte finish/ridges on the inside of the filter at risk.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Welcome accessory for Nikon 200mm Micro This lens hood dates back to the time when Nikon did not offer lens hoods as standard accessories with a lens. It is also the old screw in type design. That said, it is none the less a welcome addition to anyone purchasing the Nikon 200mm Micro. Great for outdoor use. I only wish that it could be easily reversed, snapped and stored on the front of the lens (like the new lens hoods are). It's awkward to carry when not being used. However, it still serves a useful function for all outdoors, bright sunlight photography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid construction but . . . This a solidly built metal lens hood that adds a little weight to the lens, but the 200mm Micro is a lens that should be used nearly 100% of the time in conjunction with a tri-pod, so that should not be an issue. What may be somewhat of an issue is the fact that the hood is mounted on the lens with threads, therefore care must be given so as not to crossthread it. Also, the hood is not easily stored with the lens, as it cannot be attached in reverse. Other than these minor issues, it is a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from no hood winking here solid METAL construction, perfect crinkled finish matching the 200mm lens, yes its a screw on hood and no it can't be reversed like the bayonet mount can but it will fit inside the 200mm lens case and to prevent chafing I place my lens inside a gallon size plastic bag, slip the hood over the bagged lens then into the case. I also got the lens hoodie to cover the opening in the field because you won't be able to use the lens cap with the hood in place

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If You Have The Lens, You Will Want This Hood If you have the Nikon D-Series 200mm f/4.0 Micro (macro) lens, you probably will want this hood. Like many of the hoods on Nikon's older lenses, it does screw on as opposed to clipping on like the newer models. A bit of an inconvenience and if you have larger hands you may have difficulty getting the lens cap on as the cap clips into the hood's threads. The finish on the lens is the same crinkle finish as on the lens and the quality is outstanding. The lens does get significantly longer with the hood attached so consider that if you plan on using a case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In the hood..... Solid construction adds to this hood's simplistic beauty. I love the wrinkle finish as it matches the Nikkor 200mm micro it fits. It's length is just slightly too long for me to fit my hand in to place the lens cap but it does block all side light. Love it and recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome to the Hood Quality product, metal flake matches the lens it is designed for. You may need something to cover your lens/hood because the 62mm cap that covers the 200mm macro won't fit while hood is in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I need to buy it I have to buy it because is not included with the Nikon 200mm f/4 Micro. I think must be included, because is necessary. Anyway is very good constructed.
