Nikon 16mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Capable of producing truly unique imagery, the AF Fisheye-NIKKOR 16mm f/2.8D from Nikon offers a distinct and creative look, characterized by noticeable distortion and a broad 180° angle of view. A 9.8" minimum focusing distance can be used to accentuate close-up subjects and the Close-Range Correction system helps to ensure consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range. A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements, and helps to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, a built-in lens hood also cuts flare and offers some physical protection to the front element.

Fisheye prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 24mm equivalent focal length.
Full-frame coverage, 180° angle of view produces creatively distorted imagery and is well suited for interiors, sports, and nature applications.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is suitable for photographing in difficult lighting conditions.
Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Close-Range Correction system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance of 9.8" to infinity.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Built-in petal-shaped hood helps prevent lens flare and also protects the front lens element.
Four rear filters are included: L37C UV, A2 light amber, B2 light blue, and 056 orange. One filter must be in place at all times.

    Nikon 16mm f/2.8 reviews

    AF Fisheye-NIKKOR 16mm f/2.8D Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 137.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun, fun, fun This is a fun lens. Period. I find fisheyes to be an excellent choice, not only for the seemingly obvious subjects, but also for looking at 'standard' scenes in a less-than standard way. When mounted on my F6, with it's large viewfinder, a whole new world appears. As is usually noted regarding fisheyes, one must take care to protect the front element from scuffing and damage. Also, watch those toes, as your feet are often included in the frame. I would like to see a better fitting lens cap, as the one supplied seems a little loose. I find using a rubber band running length wise seems to work fine to add some extra security.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't go wrong with a fisheye purchase This is a very small, sturdy and lightweight lens. I believe that everyone from pro sports photographers to interior/architectural photographers to hobbyists can benefit from having this unusual lens in his/her bag. It simply expands your creative envelope that much more. This lens is acceptably sharp at or near wide open and is very contrasty. A lot of reviews for this lens cite the slip on cap as a negative; I can see where it will probably end up being a nuisance, however mine still fits snuggly, but I would probably carry a rubberband to help keep the cap on when not in use. Don't think twice about throwing down the cash for this lens--you won't regret ANY of the images you get with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon quality and suprisingly affordable Years ago I bought a 16mm f2.8 lens from an independent lens maker because it was cheaper. It was acceptably sharp at f8, but only sharp in the middle at f2.8. I don't need a lens with a 180-degree angle of view very often, so it was good enough. Recently I photographed an event of great importance to my boss with the off-brand 16mm and I had to send him the jpg file with an explination as to why the image was not very sharp. The next day I ordered the Nikon 16mm f2.8. The Nikkor is sharper at f2.8 than the other lens is at any aperture. I should have bought the Nikkor lens years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Fisheye Lens Great lense for wide panos. Full 180 degree field of view. Only minor correction needed in Photoshop when horizon line is straight. Quick auto focus, tack sharp. There is a learning curve, but well worth the investment. Other methods I have utilized, such as PCE lenses and stitching of multiple, overlaping images have not yielded the same high quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Watch Your Toes My comments are based on using the lens on a Nikon D700. I am shooting three styles with this lens: CLOSE-UP ART SHOTS -- If you're used to shooting a 10.5mm fisheye on a DX body, you will be a little disappointed by the minimum focusing distance (10.2 as opposed to 5.5) I've read that you can improve this by removing the rear filter, but I haven't tried it yet. The best compositions for me have been scenes with strong horizontal or vertical elements. LANDSCAPES -- You will get a fresh new perspective on scenes by shooting them with the 16mm fisheye. To avoid excess distortion, keep the focal plane level and parallel to the subject. ARCHITECTURE -- As with landscapes, a whole new perspective is offered with this lens, but you have to watch your shooting angles to avoid excessive distortion. De-fishing some images in post-processing will provide excellent results with an extremely wide view.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon Fisheye AF 16mm f 2.8 I have been using Nikon equipment to shoot skateboard photography for 25 odd years now. I thought it was about time to up grade my manual 16mm lens for a fully integrated lens. I have now used it to shoot 2 major events and the lens has been a knock out success. Its so nice to have the flash systems integrate with the lens aperture setting etc, and if need be change from Manual setting to one of the cameras other modes if need be. But more so the tonal quality and sharpness of the new lens is awesome. I'm very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Fisheye I am using this for an upcoming wedding to capture the whole church. I tested it at the church and could not believe the quality out of the lens. Beautiful images - not corny fisheye pictures. I also shot the wedding dress in a tight tight bathroom and it turned out gorgeous. I have many plans for this lens - including full field / court sports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got Resolution! You won't run out of resolution with this optic. Even wide open it's a homerun. If you're fussy and want 4X6 prints (feet that is), use f/5.6. You'd think you'd get flare with such a wide optic. But....I won't say more but simply upload a shot I took from Muley Point of Goosenecks Park and Monument Valley with my lower resolution D700. Results with the D800E are equally impressive.
