Schoeps CMIT 5 Overview

  • 1Description

The gray Schoeps CMIT 5U is a short, lightweight shotgun condenser microphone designed to deliver accurate close and distant capture of dialog and musical instruments for boom operators, audio engineers, and musicians in film, television, and video production as well as music recording applications. Its supercardioid/lobe-shaped polar pattern yields precise directionality, high immunity to wind noise, and low coloration at the off-axis sections of the capsule.

Multiple filter settings allow you to tailor the 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response to suit different environments and scenarios. A 40 Hz roll-off is active without any filter selection; the switches provide low-cut filters at 80 Hz or 300 Hz for management of proximity effect and handling noise, while a selectable high-frequency boost at 10 kHz enables increased vocal clarity and compensation for high-frequency loss caused by windscreens.

LED indicators provide a reading of settings in low light and the settings are retained after power down. No batteries are required as the CMIT 5U is operated via 48V phantom power. It includes a windscreen, mic clip, and wood case.

Enhanced Rejection of Off-Axis Sound
Low-coloration and steady attenuation of off-axis sound results in a narrow pick-up pattern and balanced sonic character
High Directionality
The supercardioid/lobe-shaped polar pattern offers directionality that increases smoothly with higher frequencies
Switchable Filters
Select one of three filter settings for a high-frequency rise or reduced low frequencies
Versatile Frequency Selections
Choose between a 5 dB shelving boost at 10 kHz, a 6 dB/octave roll-off at 300 Hz, an 18 dB/octave roll-off at 80 Hz, or a 6 dB/octave roll-off at 40 Hz (default mode)
Neutral Sonic Characteristics
The wide frequency response and high maximum SPL enable the microphone to accurately capture dialog and instruments

    Schoeps CMIT 5 Reviews

CMIT 5U Shotgun Microphone (Gray) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Location Sound Mic I've used this mic for interior interview style shoots and it has performed perfectly. True to what others have said about it, the mic really captures the true sound with no coloration of signal and very good side rejection. If you are booming, you have to cue carefully due to its high directivity but when you hit the sweet spot, this mic shines. The two cut filters and one boost work as you would expect from a mic of this quality and I can't wait to use this mic in some more demanding situations. This mic has taken its place right next to my MKH 50 and Sanken CS2 as a valuable part of my arsenal. Have not used it yet in high humidity or outside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Shotgun I have been using this mic for over 7 years now, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best investment I have ever made. The only issue I can see is: If your pre is having issues, if your pre is low quality or if your pre is perfect, you WILL hear it. This mic is unbelievably clear for a shotgun. I would recommend a Sound Devices pre-amp equipped recorder (like the 722 or 744) just because of this. The new Zoom H6 is what I'm beginning to use for misc foley or field recording, and it works very well, but, if recording anything that won't be buried, this mic warrants a strong, clear pre-amp like from the Sound Devices. I highly recommend this mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Look No Further. I am a documentary filmmaker, and was looking for the best quality sound for mounting a shotgun microphone directly to my camera. Booming is not always an option for me, nor is it the way I mainly work. Yes it is expensive, and may seem strange to just be strapping this puppy to a camera, but worth it's weight in diamonds. And I 100% would make the purchase again now that I've had an opportunity to work with it. The sound that you get from this shotgun is top of the line - and as a filmmaker who appreciates good sound - if you do - look no further.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Authenticity in blue! Our projects cover just about any subject, in almost any context. Currently, we're working in the wild recording natural sounds and conducting interviews surrounded by interested birds, bugs and lovely bucoli airiness. This appropriately blue microphone, combined with our Sound Devices mixer (also purchased at B&H), has made a gentle heaven of these earthly sounds and made our interviews sharp, clean and absolutely authentic. It's remarkable weight (almost nothing) and built-in low cut, gradual low cut and presence settings make it more flexible... suitable for interior voice recording. I've tried and tried to think of what might be a drawback about this amazing bit of technology, but I can't think of a thing. Using it is simply a humbling experience. Thank you Scheops!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great sound from schoeps Use the cmit5 for the first time last week on a drama shoot. Great warm sound..absolutely love this mic. Even the director noticed the difference in quality..(which are quite rare). I love the weight!..I love the sound!..I love how it looks in blue!..the only thing i need to mention is that the reach of the mic drops off after 4-5ft..not great for wide shots..not that it matters..its not a long shotgun anyways.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Shotgun Mic! Blew me away! Best. Analog. Shotgun Mic. Ever. Hands down. If you can afford this mic.....get it. So crisp and clear!!! There are other great shotgun mics out there that have a really warm sound like the Neumann KMR 81 i MT which is also an amazing shotgun mic! I also use my Sennheiser MKH8060 for documentaries and reality tv and it is by far my favorite for those applications (although it is actually quite good in narrative too. Just picks up a lot of background noise) because it is so forgiving on off-axis sound and doesn't add any discoloration to any off-axis dialogue/sound! But like I said......Schoeps is still the best in my opinion. From my list from budget - very good - would have to be: Rode/Audio Technica - Sennheiser/Neumann - Schoeps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE BEST TRUE SHOTGUN EVER! First I have to say the price is only scary if you haven't heard the mic. Read the specs and you will see it is amazing. Does it deliver? The answer, YES! First I will tell you even my sound guy ( I come from sound as well, not just a shooter who could give a rats knees)My sound guy looked at me side ways when I told him I bought this mic. You see in the past I had issues with an older Schoeps that was great for interviews but in the field failed. This was not the case with the CMIT5U! This mic out preforms anything I have used. In a crowded VIP room with limited time and movie stars, we couldn't mic them, we just had the shotgun. With the on mic trim we used it on them and in post the editor who was in the field commented wow I didn't think we were getting anything and it really focused on the subject while omitting the room! I am amazed!. It is solid, never fails, better than any Neumann KMR81, Sennhieser etc... It is perfect for Film, tough enough for ENG (but too good for that) and better than anything I have heard thus far. On the mic you can trim and it takes it with the sweet presence and color you expect of a world class mic. On a scale from 1-10...mine now goes to 11! You will awe editors and other techs alike. But here is one warning, don't gloat to much, let the mic do the work and the editor will say something on your behalf, let them gloat for you!

why is the grey version cost more than the blue one?

The standard surface finish color of the CMIT 5U is blue. The CMIT5U is available in Antracite Gray as a special order item and custom made from Schoeps. Functionally both units are identical.

What's the general maximum recording distance for ...

What's the general maximum recording distance for basic dialogue work? How far away is it still usable with a good quality preamps?
    Asked by: Stone

Why does this description contradict itself re: midrange frequencies and off-axis performance?
    Asked by: Brian
Coloration vs Rejection. It has smooth off-axis rejection without coloring the sound. It sounds like it simply attenuates off axis dialogue while keeping the frequency response consistent. It feels neutral along the spectrum, but just enjoys a transparent affinity towards dialogue frequencies. Essentially, it's very forgiving while still being directional.
