Pentax 100mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Optimized for DSLRs and compatible with film SLR cameras, the smc PENTAX-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens is constructed with an aluminum housing and 6 weather seals (thus the WR designation) so you can shoot in almost any environment without risking internal damage to the lens. Optical elements are treated with the Pentax Super Protect multi-layer coating to lower surface reflection, reduce ultraviolet rays, and deliver clear, high-contrast images. Plus, the configurations of its optical elements produce crisp, sharp images with no flare and ghosting. It also features a "Quick Shift" focusing system which allows you to easily switch between manual and AF modes.

Achieving life-size (1:1) magnification, this macro lens is ideal for the close-up photography including, but not limited to, nature, technical, medical or product applications. It is also great for portraiture. Its 8 rounded diaphragm blade configuration assists in producing out-of-focus areas of your images with a pleasing look.

Pentax 100mm f/2.8 reviews

smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 103.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from compact, light, excellent IQ Only used this lens a little bit, but the results so far have been impressive. The lens is very compact and light, significantly lighter than my old Tokina macro. The hood system is odd: the hood attaches to part of the lens that does not move during focusing, so the lens moves forward inside the hood, but it works. The front element is deeply recessed from the front edge of the lens which would provide adequate shading in some situations. A thread-on hood (49mm)could be used on the mobile section in lieu of the provided bayonet-mount hood. Auto-focus adequate, manual focus much better in macro range (it ALWAYS is).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack Sharp The trees in the attached images are about a mile distant. The first id unretouched JPEG converted from DNG using Photoshop Elements 12. In both cases, what you see is what the camera saw. These images were made using a K3. Depth of field control with this lens is is as good as it is sharp. Build quality is five star as well. The only negative I have to say about this lens is the location of the focus ring. I usually store the lens hood on the lens. It covers the ring. Given the IQ, I'll gladly live with this minor boo boo. If I could give this lens more than 5 stars, I would. B&H as always, great service. Thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens I love shooting macro and this lens is perfect for my needs. I like that it's weather-resistant because when I shoot outdoors, I tend to catch all sorts of little creatures in the early morning (when they're not quite as active) and that can often mean a lot of humidity in the summer. Coupled with the K-5, I don't think twice about being in damp weather. This lens stays on my camera or in my kit bag. I never leave it behind. When shooting 1:1, you definitely need a tripod unless your hands are rock steady which can make capturing spur of the moment insect shots a little tough but that's not a fault of the lens. I like that I can use autofocus and then quickly tweak by hand as needed without having to shut-off AF first.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the money! I bought this lens for my Pentax K-3. I'm a professional photographer and wanted the best macro I could buy for it. I didn't give the lens 5 stars because it hunts more than any other macro lens I've owned and it's by far the noisiest one I've owned by any maker. I would rate it 4.5 for sharpness. The build quality is super, it's weather proof and has a great lens hood as well! I've only had the lens for a couple of weeks so I can't post a lot of pics. I've attached some test shots of flowers in my yard. I would give this lens my recommendation. Make sure you buy a high quality UV filter for it, don't skimp. B&H is the best camera store around, buy with confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Little Lens I have been wanting a dedicated Macro lens that went closer than 1:2 for awhile, I finally was able to afford this lens and all I can say is WOW! It is small, reasonably light, and incredibly sharp. My biggest problem is holding it steady enough at closest focus, well that and having things move in the wind! A solid tripod is a MUST at the closer focusing distances, and a subject that is not moving! What it works well for: Isolating objects from their background. Getting REALLY close for high magnification while keeping a certain distance from skittish things... like bugs. Candid photos. Anything where you need a soft creamy background, the bokeh is incredible.... really! Things that bug me: It hunts a little bit at times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly Excellent! Edge-to-edge sharp... my 'Go-To' for close-up work. ==> See attached photos taken with this lens and Pentax K-5 II (APS-C) dSLR. 100mm focal length is a big plus in providing enough distance from the subject to use a sturdy tripod in most situations and for hand-held shots at higher ISO as well. Weather-resistant WR metal construction is a bonus. Manual focus (which I use most of the time) is quick and precise due to location, knurling and width of the focusing ring. The same knurling/width is found at the rear of the lens which facilitates mounting and dismounting on the camera body. 49mm filter size makes this item less expensive... (and is same size as on two 'legacy' lenses from my Pentax MX film camera: 50mm normal and 28mm wideangle).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp versatile lens Sharp lense and reasonably fast f/2.8. Works excellently as I expected as a macro. With the 100mm focal length I am a good distance away from subject in macro. Depth of field is very narrow wide open, great bokeh. I often manually focus for macro to control focus easily. Auto focusing from macro to a long distance can be slow & hunt, smaller adjustments are quick and accurate. I am finding I use this lens often for tight portraits and moderate telephoto street and landscapes since it is sharper and faster than my 18-55mm kit lens and 50-300mm f/4-5.8. It compliments well my 35mm f/2 and 50mm f1.8. when I want to go in tighter. Weather sealing is a great bonus for outdoor use. Build is impressive, all metal exterior.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic lens As a hobbyist I struggled whether or not to spend the money on this lens. I had been using a Nikon 5-T add on lens with my kit lens for close-ups with pretty good results and wasn't sure if I would get a worthwhile improvement in image quality for the cost. I will say that this lens is worth every penny. Beautiful bokeh, and very very sharp. The only negative is some focus hunting but that is to be expected with this type of lens and autofocus.
