Tiffen 77NDK3 overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 77mm Digital Neutral Density Filter Kit is a complete set of filters to help you get better shots in bright light as well as assisting you with some special effect images.

Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO by 1/16

    Tiffen 77NDK3 reviews

77mm Digital Neutral Density Filter Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good value for price. Covers the most needed range if you are shooting DSLR video. Better than using Cokin as these are glass and much more durable. I bought these rather than a Fader ND (of various brands) because reports of image degradation and X patterns were so inconsistent. Also because this gives you multiple filters 1 stop apart, you have room to use more then one camera and adjust iso to suit the filter. There is a slight green color cast that varies filter to filter. If you shoot video, you will need to white balance between changing or stacking filters. A couple of the filters where not properly cleaned and had some kind of manufacturing chemical on them that needed to be cleaned off with windex.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT Filters for the Money These are excellent filters for anyone!I was originally considering getting a Variable neutral density for nearly the same cost, but the X effect and the fact they they are subject to considerably more color cast than fixed ND's made me stay away. You can block out 2,3,4,5,6,7,and 9 stops of light just by stacking these filters, and if you're using a step up ring from a smaller lens, say 62mm, you experience little to no vingetting from the filters since they are 77mm.These filters came with perfect threads, no scratches and a case! Excellent value for the money and a wonderful product that will continue serving me well for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality & inexpensive I'm using these ND filters with my Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 and Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 lenses on a Panasonic GH2. I'm mostly interested in shooting video, not stills. I got the 77mm size and an adapter ring to step down to the 52mm threads of my lenses. There's not much to say about these ND filters, other than they work very well, with no color cast or resolution loss. I had considered getting a variable ND filter, but they're all much more expensive and generally don't produce results as good as traditional NDs. It only takes a second to switch out one for the other, so really the hassle of separate ND filters is a non-issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality Bought this set and was so impressed when I took my first photo. What I love is being able to gang together several filters as all are threaded. It brought me to a whole new level of photography and I have made some very successful photos with them. Very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results from good priced ND filter I am experimenting with ND filters currently by cutting ambient light and using a monobloc to light the subject for that golden light at anytime of the day, while using wide open aperature. I love the beefy construction, and carry case is nice. I wish the carry case had a belt loop, but thats a minor detail. Attached you will find a test shot I've taken with a ND 1.2 + d600 + 70-200 @ f2.8 + iso200 + einstein at 1/4 power with a beauty dish taken on a bright sunny day at 3-4pm. WB seems spot on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from ND Filter Test I bought these filters to be able to use very slow shutter speeds while photographing ocean scenes. I spent a day at Botany Bay in the ACE Basin on Edisto Island, SC photographing the trees on the beach. The light was very bright and so I used the 1.2 filter to render the waves more creamy. Unfortunately, when I later put the images in Lightroom I discovered they all had a distinct yellow-blue caste, which could not be corrected. Therefore, I did another test, and the photos attached show a scene with no filter on the camera and one with the 1.2 Tiffen ND filter. The color caste has shifted noticeably and cannot be corrected. Given these results I feel these filters are not at all useful and would not recommend purchasing them. (The attached photos were taken with a Nikon D800 on a Manfrotto tripod, 24-70 mm Nikon lens at 70 mm, ISO 200 in Aperture priority (f/8).)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ND Kit I have recently experimented with long exposure photo's. This kit was recommended to me as a good place to start with ND's. Most of my photo's with these filters have been flowing/moving water and clouds that I wanted to appear silky smooth. So far no complaints, these filters work very well with very little color cast. They can be stacked for more light control and creativity. I would recommend these to anyone seeking different photos in long exposure mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for your camera bag ND filters aren't something that everyone has in their bag of tricks, but they should be. In harsh light environments, (I'm in Phoenix, AZ)they offer the flexibility to adjust your shutter speed down without blowing out the image. It may seem like a small thing, but being at the mercy of a high shutter speed can really limit options. I use the filters in combination with a tripod when taking Architectural photos; the slower shutter speeds allow for people to pass through a shot as either a blur or not show up at all. Pretty handy when shooting in a public place, where you have no control over passing pedestrians (or cars). ND filters are also great for slowing the shutter speeds and creating blurred artistic photos - the most common example is a waterfall - it comes out as a soft cascade, rather than singular frozen droplets.
