Tiffen 77NDK3 Overview

The Tiffen 77mm Digital ND Filter Kit is a complete set of filters to help you get better shots in bright light as well as assist you with some special effect images.

Neutral density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience, and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high-speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high-speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand, or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO by 1/16

Great for outdoor flash portraits

I do outdoor portraiture on occasion and love using my Fujifilm XF 16-55mm lens as it has a f/2.8 aperture. However, it's very difficult to use the wider aperture on bright days; the ND filter kit allows me to open up the aperture to get the desired bokeh without going into HSS. In addition this kit allows me to to stack filters when I need to fine-tune the light entering the lens.

Exposure not quite right

I found that my set was not quite right. My photos were coming out overexposed despite double checking the ISO, aperture and shutter speed calculation. Only thing left is the filters. I found that I had to use the 4 stop instead of the 3 stop. I also had difficulty removing the color cast.

I would buy it again

I do really like it. It does take some getting used to and balancing out what I am trying to shoot and what the sun is doing. I think a bit more practice of deciding which how many stops I need to slow down and I think I will nail the shot the way I would like

This is a great set. Useful for outdoor use especially. I use this with my Black Magic production camera 4k to help control the light. Great shades for your favorite camera.

Don't stack them all

These work well if you don't try to stack all three. If you do that, you get a distinct red shift area in center frame. I wonder if B&W's do that. Too expensive to find out.

Better on a mirrorless camera

I used these on a Z7 and unlike a DSLR I can see what I get before the exposure. I had a problem with screw on filters knocking the lens out of focus even in live view on a DSLR. Maybe it was me but I have better luck on a mirrorless. These appear to be of good quality and most importantly do what they are supposed to do.

question

is this set going to cause vignetting when used on Tokina 11-16 lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
You may experience vignette when using these filters on a Tokina 11-16mm lens and I advise you to go with wide-angle optimized filters. The Tiffen 77mm Wide Angle Filter Kit can be found at the following link: http://bhpho.to/1tWwDPO

question

Do these filters have screw on threads so you can stack filters?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, the fronts of the filters are threaded at 77mm size also so you may stack them upon one another.

Neutral density filters do not cause any color cast or affect the color of an image, but rather, darken an image.

Are these IRND Filters?

Are these IRND Filters?
Asked by: Derek
No, Tiffen 77mm Digital ND Filter Kit (2, 3, 4-Stop) are standard ND filters. Tiffen do not offer this filter as a kit. You most get them individually. You can review the 77mm IRND filter and select between different stops on the link below. question

Can the Tiffen 77 MM Variable Neutral Density filter be stacked on top of these filters and if so, does doing so cause any color issues?
Asked by: Ron
I have had no noticeable issues with the little stacking that I have done, but keep in mind that with a wide angle lenses and filters (especially stacked) you may see some vignette. From a technical / more detailed oriented standpoint however, every layer of glass light travels through will cause more refraction and somewhat degrade your image quality.

question

Do these Tiffen lenses work with Canon eos 7d?
Asked by: Anonymous
Tiffen 77mm filters will thread onto any lens which has filter threads designed to accept 77mm filters. The camera body is not the determining factor when considering if the filter will be able to be attached, the lens is.This ND kit will work well with the Canon EOS 7D and allow you to limit the amount of light coming into your lens for greater aperture control and do semi-long exposures.
