Matthews BH-20 Overview

Unlike most other ball head mounts which are manufactured from die-cast components, the BH-20 Ball Head with 6" Suction Cup Mount from Matthews is individually CNC-machined from solid bar stock to ensure precise control over all critical dimensions and elements.

This ball head will support loads up to 26.4 lb and it features a bubble level. It is supplied with a precision-machined Arca-type quick release plate that is well-balanced and allows quick, safe, and positive-locking of the camera. The mounting plate can stay permanently attached to the camera to avoid taking the time to screw the camera onto the ball or screwing the ball onto the camera.

This head features a 3/8"-16 mounting thread on the bottom to mount onto a tripod, rig, or optional suction cup mount, and it also includes the Matthews 6" suction cup mount. When mounting your camera with the suction cup on a moving vehicle, be certain the system is well stabilized and supported. Make sure smooth mounting surfaces are clean and as free of dust as possible to insure that it grips firmly.

I bought 4 of these to secure action cameras to vehicle on the drift track. They offer lots of positioning freedom and include the camera attachment plate, so you don't have to go looking for a separate solution for that. The first time I used one of these ended in disaster. During a very high-g turn, the suction mount, along with my new FDR-X3000 action camera, went tumbling off the car, bouncing off the race track several times. The vacuum plunger broke off, making the mount unusable. Before trying again, I did some tests and found that one of my remaining three mounts would leak down after about ten minutes, as indicated by the plunger beginning to extend beyond the red line. I then wiped the vehicle and the bottom of the mount with a water-dampened paper towel, then re-did the test. All three were still holding strong after an hour. So, lesson learned, before sticking on a vehicle, dampen the suction cup slightly and you'll get a better grip. I never had to do this with my much less expensive GoPro suction mount, and those are only 3-4 inches in diameter, and no fancy vacuum knob. So, make of that what you will. I will keep using these mounts because I think they can hold a larger camera if needed and I really like not having to disturb the aiming point just to swap out batteries, memory cards or even the entire camera like I would with some mounts, The built-in quick release mechanism is a more professional way to do this and this mount certainly looks the part.

question

If I want to mount my 5D on a car for very stable shots, would you recommend this product? Or something with more suction cups?
Asked by: Anonymous
This device should be more than equal to the task. It is rated for over 26 lbs. With most lenses a 5D weighs in at no more than 5-7 lbs. Matthews products have been used in feature films for years. They are engineered to be reliable.

How would you mount this to a car? I cant seem to figure out how the suction mount works
Asked by: Chris
Clean the mounting surface with water, remove the yellow protective cap, push cup onto mounting location applying pressure while simultaneously pumping the button until the red line disappears.

question

I want to mount a gimbal head on the base of this item. The specific gimbal expects a standard 3/8 in post. Will that work?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, you can mount a 3/8 item on this 1/4 mount if you use a bushing like this:Oben 3/8 -16 to 1/4 -20 Reducer Bushing B&H # OB1039. Whenever using suction devices, always do what the pros do and apply a safety rope to the camera so damage is minimized if the suction breaks for any reason.

question

Hello is there any articulated arm that I could attach to this device to have better flexibility on camera position?
Asked by: Gian C.
We do not carry a articulated arm that would attach to the BH 20. The camera weight need to be over center for the ball head to work correctly.
