question
What is the warranty on this unit? I have searched web sites and the only remark I could find was a 3 year warranty but no specification of what that includes. So basically, does the 3 year warranty also cover the battery. Also, how old are these units when you received them; I'm told if the manufacturing date of the product is more than 6 months old, you are getting cheated on the life of the battery since they only last so long?
The APC units are generally shipped with the battery disconnected, and you will receive instructions on opening the panel to connect the battery plug-in to the unit. I can attest that the battery life in a Smart-UPS was three years, and the power was rarely switched off as it powered the main PC in the Cordova, Alaska Harbormaster's) office. I also installed a larger unit in the KCHU public radio translator, which was never turned off, and improved reliability immensely. The weight of a battery governs the cost of shipping, so look for a local source and haul the replacement yourself. The build quality is great, and battery replacement is straightforward.

question
how warm do these units get?
I don't think they get hot at all. We have about 6 of these and have used them several years. We're very happy with them.

question
How long of run time does this unit have when it kicks in ?
It really depends on how much equipment is plugged into it. With a computer, large screen monitor and speaker system, it has gone 20 minutes with no problem. I have never tested it beyond that, since my main purpose is to give me an opportunity to shut down the system in an orderly fashion without losing documents in the event of what appears to be more than a brief blackout.

question
can i plug can I plug the APC Back-UPS Pro External Battery Pack in to this backup?
Why don't you call the manufacturer they are more qualified to answer the question. I did have one issue with the backup and that was I had too many devices connected to it and when it performed the self test I would get an error message that indicated a space issue and power problem. I called the manufacturer and they solved my issue.

question
Is the fan always on? Or does it only turn on when charging the battery or when delivering power? If the fan only comes on when needed, how often does it turn on?
I only hear it when it is providing battery power.

question
What is the difference between the current model, BR1500G, and previous version, BX1500G?
The BR has a separate connector in the back for an external battery pack that triples the run time of the unit. I use this arrangement a lot because it's a low cost way to put a lot of battery backup in one spot.

question
Is there any problem with laying this unit on its side due to the lead acid battery? I'd like to get it, but due to space restrictions, I would need to lay it down to use it.
yes, it will need air flow when in battery back up mode. It is possible that it also needs it for normal cooling. It is designed to be upright for air flow. This has nothing to do with the batteries, because they are gel type.
