Canon 4409B002 Overview

  • 1Description

The Extender EF 1.4X III from Canon is designed for select Canon EF mount L-series telephoto lenses. It increases the focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.4x while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, it combines redesigned optics, improved data communication between lens and camera and enhanced environmental protection. It is ideal for photojournalists and wildlife, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects and it reduces the need to carry heavy telephoto lenses.

The Extender EF 1.4X III features seven optical elements in three groups and all optical elements have Canon's Super Spectra coating to reduce ghosting and flare. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, the extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available - allowing the photographer to capture balanced, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable AF accuracy even when capturing moving subjects. When attached, the 1.4x extender reduces the effective maximum aperture by 1 stop.

A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon's professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

Note: This converter is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L. Additionally, please see the lens and/or camera body manual for full autofocus compatibility information with the Extender EF 1.4X III.

Canon 4409B002 Reviews

Extender EF 1.4X III is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 475.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice and sharp !! Work very well with my 70-200 f4 L and my 7D with a magnification of 1.6 to 280 mm I lose nothing in image quality as it can be perceptible. At 5.6 and a focal that it is even sharper. Uses for birds and photography fox and I am extremely satisfied. But only compatible with the Series L, not all lens. Also very useful when traveling. Even though it is a bit expensive but it is very good quality. You pay for what you have! A must to have!! 4 Start because it's not compatible with all lenses You won't regret. Look the picture at 280 mm, F8, 1/500 iso 200 No modification could be at 5.6 too,and it's not my best one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For that extra reach! While there's much flack about the sharpness of extenders, even the EF 1.4x III, I'd say they were right. But wait!! I saw the same issue when attaching this extender to my 70-200 2.8 L II—slightly back focused on my 1DX2. The fix is to make AF microadjustments on the camera body to calibrate for AF focus. After fine tuning the adjustments, now razor sharp on both W-T and the AF servo focus is fast. Totally surprised how many photographers are unaware of this critical and necessary AF microadjustment. However, be forewarned, camera menu AF microadjustments are typically not available on Canon consumer type DSLRs. The weather sealing is great, and guess what? This teleconverter also works on my 120-300mm 2.8 zoom too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extender EF 1.4X III, This is a great addition to the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lense, a clear recommendation from my side, very pleased with the product. If you are considering purchase please be mindful of your canon camera model with respect to autofocus when using the 1.4 attachement, some further information here .The Image Stabilizer does not operate with the following cameras: EOS 650, 620, 630/600, RT, 700, 750, 850, EOS-1, A2/A2E, 10s, Elan, Rebel/Rebel S, Rebel II/Rebel SII. also the 70D, the 7D MarkII and 80D are compatible with this lense configuration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Piece that you must have I am wildlife photographer, previously I own 2.0 EF extender II, that piece for me was to slow and without sharp output, almost never used in the field! After long studying I decided to get that piece of beauty .... First thing when I got it I put on my 70-200mm f /2.8, it work quick and flawlessly , Was very excited to try on my 600mm f /4 works quick , with almost not different in quality and with outstanding output GREAT PIECE!!! Once installed on my 600 I never took it off, now with reach of 840 mm on F/5.6 I can reach wildlife from distance without disturbing them and get awesome quality shots, great job canon engineers !!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cant spend $ + for a Prime Lens get an extender I use the 1.4x with my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. This allows me to capture birds in flight at 560mm on my full frame Canon 6d. You sacrifice an f-stop in light. So far with this combination I cannot autofocus I've only been able to achieve only manual focus. With the 1.4x the sharpness degradation of the photos is minimal if at all. I do have the 2x extender which you do have a noticeable drop in picture quality you need a tripod vs handheld to eliminate shake & blur. You also sacrifice 2 stops with the 2x. I prefer the 1.4x combination to the 2x extender I mostly take wild life shots that are hand held. The 1.4x doesn't add much weight or bulk to your set up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it Pluses: works very well on 70-200 f/2.8 II. Sharpness very similar, and you eventually might not notice it's on. Minuses: yes, it's a stop loss and f/4 would be the widest you go (but usually close to 300 mm you'd want to shoot at f/8 if hand-held anyway). Focusing slightly slower, a bit more hunting. Definitely + weight and additional gate for dirt and dust when attached. Bottom line: if you need more that 200 mm on occasion, and it's a rare occasion, definitely worth the money, saving the hassle of changing 70-200 workhorse to more suitable 100-400 IS. If it's not a rare occasion, get 100-400 or if $ is not an issue, prime 300 or 400.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool Kit to add to your 300mm Canon lens Hi have Canon 5D MKII and a 7D MKII bodies. Living in Africa and having the opportunity to get out often, a 300mm F2.8 has been on the cards for some time. After buying this lovely lens I realised, as with almost all lenses, that a little bit more would have been nice. I then invested in the 2x converter. When fitted to the 7D the 2x was just too much. When fitted to the 5D it worked perfectly. Then I bought the 1.4X converter. It works perfectly with the 7D and the 300mm F2.8. It is a killer combination for taking pictures of animals and birds. Lens is still very fast and the pictures are crisp.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Optics but the AF does not Work I have Canon 70D and a EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L lense. The optics was good when taking some pictures of birds and a sunrise from a distance. However, the AF did not work. I read all the literature and based on that I thought the AF would work. I called Canon and they stated it would work only on certain cameras of their line, but not the 70D. I was disappointed because I paid the extra money for AF. I returned the extender and purchased a cheaper one and will probably have to manual focus. So I would check with Canon before purchasing this extender if you want the AF to work.
