Nikon 35mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Incredibly versatile despite being a prime lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G from Nikon is a general wide-angle lens well-suited for everyday shooting. Its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. The lens's optical design incorporates one aspherical elements, which helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve greater sharpness and more accurate rendering. A Nano Crystal Coat has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and accurate color response. Additionally, benefitting the optical assets, a Silent Wave Motor affords fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video applications.

Wide-angle 35mm lens is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One aspherical element is used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A Rear Focusing System is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon 35mm f/1.4 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 146.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens rocks This is one of the two lenses I use to shoot weddings and it rocks. I used to use the old Nikon 35mm f2 lens for weddings but this lens is sharper, faster in low light and focuses faster. It also finds its way onto the D4 for everyday stuff, like hanging out with the kid, going to downtown Bend for a night with friends, hikes, bikes, backpacks. Twigs with bright sky behind do indeed make purple lines at the edges, but who cares? I have yet to meet a bride complaining of lateral fringe in a portrait. If you use a camera for work, get rid of the old cheap lenses and upgrade to these new super fast fixed focal length lenses. They're worth every cent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BUY THIS LENS! I am a professional photographer and I shoot only Nikon lenses and gear. I am currently shooting a D800E and as you can imagine, with 36Megapixels, lenses matter. I have been on this mission recently to stop using my 24-70, and 70-200 lenses and start replacing them with primary lenses. The 35MM lens has proven to be an extremeely versatile lens with amazing clarity and very few flaws. Of course the lens is extremely expensive, but depending on the use, there isn't much out there that can compare in quality. The performance is great in low light, and the bokeh is amazing as well. If you have the means, pick one up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Lens, a few caveats... I really do love this lens! I am a commercial photographer and it is my go-to for lifestyle shoots. It is a good sturdy construction that puts up with whatever I put it through! Auto focus is great, manual focus is smooth, super sharp (even decent wide open), bokeh is gorgeous (duh!) all good things! However a couple things I noticed were... there is a good bit of barrel distortion and vignetting (although easily corrected in post) and also a good bit of chromatic aberration. For a lens of this price I thought those issues would be nonexistent. However, not enough to make me not like the lens, just a few things I noticed. Overall, great lens would definitely recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy one Nikkor 1.4 and you end up wanting them al I purchased the 105 1.4 and was fascinated how it compared to any lense. I would use my 2.8 Zooms and then the 105 1.4 and could predict which would be my favorite image. It was 80% the 105 1.4. So I had to buy the 35 1.4 and the same thing is happening. Don't know if its the quality of the lense, prime vs zoom or the "foot focal length adjustment" making better pictures but in any light condition except pitch dark you can turn off the flash. If you don't have any Nikkor 1.4 lenses, and buy anyone, it will not be your last....(I am not a professional but an enthusiast that really enjoys great glass).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly outstanding lens! I did quite a bit of soul-searching about whether to take the plunge into prime lenses -- looked at numerous image samples of Nikon 1.4g primes - 24,35, 85, and concluded that the 35 1.4g best suited my needs. I have no regrets whatsoever, in fact it may be the best lens I've ever owned. It is very sharp, has a nice bokeh, and excellent color and contrast. It's great for all types of photography -- portraits, landscapes, night, street, etc. I see very little not to like about this lens -- it does have a lot of vignetting at f1.4 (not unexpected) but this is easily fixed in Photoshop or automatically by NX2 if you shoot raw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse prime This lens has amazing detail with decent bokeh (although it's definitely not the best bokeh of the Nikkor lenses). Great for street, portraits, and everyday use. When I don't feel like carrying a 24-70 f/2.8 around, I use this lens. If I don't feel like using the tripod in blue hour / nighttime during photo walks, I take out this lens to replace the 24-70 for low light performance. I've even shot friends' weddings with this, which resulted in photos better than the official photographer. The size is great for candids (so people aren't timid by the size). The weather sealing is a plus. Decent weight. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens I realized after many years of trying to use a 50mm lens as my normal lens, that it was like my father's lens, antiquated rule of thumb. If you take family photos with your camera, good choice. But I do landscapes, street, and city night photography. For this a 35mm is much more appropriate. It is a great lens, bright and sharp. Gives me a lot of flexibility. It also makes my D800 look like a pro camera. I realize this is silly, but it looks great on the body. It also weighs a ton. I have a couple Nikon 35mm f2 lenses. They weigh nothing. One could make the argument that the f2 makes much more sense as it cost about a third and must weight about a third as much. But I love the f1.4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of Nikon's Best! This is one of Nikon's best lenses and is an amazing piece of glass! It's on my D810 90% of the time! In my opinion the 35mm focal length is perfect for landscapes, portraits, architecture, street, and everyday/family photography. The fast f/1.4 aperture allows you to shoot in just about any kind of light and the depth of color it renders is beautiful. This lens is hefty but is well balanced on my camera... feels perfect! I've gone away from using all of my f/2.8 zooms and have rediscovered my love for photography through this magnificent prime lens. My sample is sharp, has excellent bokeh, and built to last! You will not regret owning this lens if you decide to purchased. I plan on getting the 85mm f/1.4 soon and will undoubtedly be shooting with these 2 lenses exclusively!
